juweb, good questions!

last one from me.
is it possible to have a premier DH series that does not involve the UCI? what would it take to get riders/brands to embrace it?
It'll take dollars and (air)time. EWS is making something happen because they're the only ones doing it and they had a clean slate with which to work. For DH there are a lot of ingrained behaviors and resistance to change. As much as lots of us as fans want to see 10 or 12 or even 15 races in a season, the problem right now is budget to make it happen. With global currencies getting kicked super hard in the past year I don't see it happening in the short term.

So... what makes a bike unridable? Related question: was the 2012 Fury unridable compared to the current bike? Even better, what's the most unridable downhill bike on the world cup circuit from the last five years?

Mondraker with Marzocchi? Nico Vink on a Solid? Ghost?
Dude the old bike is completely unrideable vs the new bike. Look how many WC wins the new bike got. Like it won on it's 1st weekend it was so good.

Edit: Oh and since you pressed by text, Ed Masters had the most unridable bike, yet he's fast as fuck.

We actually make some Zaskar X models specifically for the UK that have meatier tires, 120mm forks, bigger discs, and 1x. Outside the UK there hasn't been too much traction for that type of trail hardtail unfortunately. Funny, the bike I was riding just prior to this Q&A sesh is a steel GT hardtail w/ a 120 fork, big brakes, super wide bars, and a short stem.

What cool new trends are you seeing on your local trails?
What do you really need your bike to do that it can't right now?
What are the things that make a bike a "must have" for you?
What are the things that make a bike, as TeamRobot would say, "unrideable"?
just about everyone is riding 6" bikes with HA around 66 degrees, half of them are the super long racing variety. and race times are 60% of what they were 4/5 years ago.
must have, proper tyres and 5-6 inches of travel.
unrideable, crap tyres and less than 5 inches of travel.

What is your recipe for Chicken Tikka Masala? I've tried recreating it from that time at Bromont and have failed miserably.

A few requests:

I really wish GT would ship more full suspension alloy bikes to my country (the Philippines). There are literally just two of us on a Sanction around here. The demand is definitely there, the Reign is selling like hotcakes in my neck of the woods even if the Sanction is a superior bike and can be sold at the same price, and, with a frame-only option, is even more marketable. There are just too few here to get into the hands of customers.

I really hope the GT Factory Racing Team can pay us a visit one of these days. Our location is perfect for some off-season fun (we happen to have some of the world's best beaches) and we have a rabid mtb fan base. The Commençal team just visited and they instantly won a lot of fans. I'm sure there are far far more GT fans here in the Philippines and they would love to see Martin, Anneke, Rachel and watch the DH guys get really loose.

And finally, my question:

How can I get GT stuff sent here (t-shirts, jerseys, stickers, the cap the team wore on their photo shoot)? On your website, stickers need a SASE but we don't have that around here anymore. I am willing to pay for shipping! Wink

Cheers!

I've got a 2014 GT Sensor carbon and it's a great bike, balanced, light and very capable both up and down. I run it with a 150mm fork though, because with the original 130mm the HA is 68,5 - steeper than most. Now GT's new entry-level full-sus "Verb" comes with a 69,5 degree HA, which is obviously against the current. What's GT's philosophy behind steep head-angles?

Hard tires are on my shit list for sure! But, short travel can be lots of fun on the right terrain. I prefer the Helion (110) over Sensor (130) in most places.

Well, I won't cook it at races anymore because the 3x I did Stevie Smith had big offs or flat tires so that's some voodoo shit.

Ok, so I make a mixture of cumin, paprika, and curry powder. I mix with plain yogurt. Coat about 2-3lb of chicken breast (not too thick but not cutlets) in this mixture. For best results let it sit for the afternoon in this mixture in the fridge.

When you're ready to cook, get your rice going and about 20 mins out fire up the broiler in the over. Put the chicken under the broiler for 5-7 mins per side depending on thickness. A little char isn't horrible but don't burn it. Remove from over and let rest. Chop and add to sauce.

In a deep frying pan, cook 1 medium yellow onion and a bit of garlic until translucent. Add in 2-3 tbsp of curry paste. Add a can of tomatoes and simmer a few mins. Then add 1 pint of heavy cream. Cook until hot. Add chicken and stir thru. Top with a bit of cilantro.

No he's not with GT. I think he was with Lifeboat but not sure really. And yes, I've cooked some Chix Tikka before, particularly at some races. See above.

Ok, lots here to digest...

Bikes in Philippines - I'll pass on info to our Asia market distributor rep. I will say that some countries have their own import laws on bikes. I'm not sure what they are in Phillipines though.

Team - The team schedule is made several months in advance. With the number of EWS & UCI races on the schedule it can get taxing to get to some markets in a season unfortunately. It's cool that the EWS is expanding to S America this season though and bringing in new fans. I hope the UCI or EWS can get to Asia in the coming years.

Merch - Drop us a line and we can try to sort you out. Sometimes the shipping & import costs are tough getting merch to some markets.

Slack HTA aren't the sole component of it. A long eff TT plays a huge part. Get your body positioned best, low BB keeps COM low for cornering and stability. The HTA increases proportional to useage of bike for GT. Fury > Sanction > Force > Sensor > Verb > Helion. The steeper the intended use, the slacker the HTA. The Verb is a starter trail bike so we don't make the HTA too slack as the rider probably wont realistically ride on trails as steep as to need that much slackness. No need for a sluggish, floppy bike on flatter trails.

Hey Todd. The last few years seem like the bike industry has been pushing the bikes through a host of rapid changes between wheel sizes, enduro race bikes establishing, the various frame standards, plus tires etc. Do you see this starting to stabilize for a while now or if not, what are the likely next changes were going to see? From your side of the fence, do you think all the changing is worthwhile and producing genuinely better bikes?

Honestly, I think the rate of change has been unnecessarily fast. It has confused riders as to what they should buy. It has pissed off dealers who get stuck marking down perfectly good merch because it's not the latest most in thing, even if it was only released a few months ago. And, it has pissed off loyal riders who get boxed into a "standard" that lasts for a short bit of time. It's super silly IMHO. Not to mention the long term customer service nightmare it has created.

But, let me be clear; this is not some huge conspiracy on part of the bike brands, component vendors, and media to fleece you out of your hard earned bucks. No, a conspiracy would require more than a one party working in conjunction with another, and having worked in the bike biz for two decades I know that idea is totally laughable. There is no gunman on the grassy knoll here folks so remove the tinfoil toque and CTFD.

This chasing of wheel sizes, tire widths, hub widths, BB widths, fitment standards, etc is what a wise man in this industry termed "flat market thrashing". Essentially the brands are just trying to find the next latest greatest to eek a smidge more performance out than the previous model year or incarnation (and in the process sell a few more units than your competitors) since there is no huge technological leaps to be made. They're honestly all well intentioned in doing so, but man does it cause chaos! As a PM I know recently joked, "The best part about 1x is never having to fuck up a FD spec again."

On the consumer side (and to a degree on the dealer side), all of this change has caused "paralysis by analysis". No one wants to buy a new bike because just as they're about to pull the trigger on a purchase another big shift happens. They sit on the sidelines waiting to purchase when the waters calm down. I totally get that feeling! If you could see my basement it's filled with outdated, yet perfectly useable, bikes, wheels, and tires that just don't fit on anything and thus are nearly useless and tough to sell off.

Think about it:
2010 - "Dude you SO have to get a trail bike" (26" wheels, 140mm travel)
2012 - "Dude you SO have to get a full suss niner" (29" wheels, 130mm travel)
2014 - "Dude you SO have to get an enduro bike" (27.5" wheels, 160mm travel)
2015 - "Dude you SO have to get a fatbike" (26/27.5/29" wheels, 4-6" tires) or in Europe "Le dude, vous SO have to get zee eBike"
2016 - Dude you SO have to get a plus bike (26/27.5/29" wheels, 2.8-3" tires)...

At the end of the day has this all created a "better bike"? Well, in the big picture yes it has as bikes now are mostly all incredibly good and amazing on the trail. But how much better are they than if we had let those changes happen a bit more organically and at a reasonable pace; that's entirely where I start to wonder.

Yesterday for example I set a PR on a local trail...on a 4-year old bike...with 29x2.2" tires...with 3x10 drivetrain...and I giggled like a newbie whilst drifting pine needle topped turns and manualing & pumping thru bits of trail...I guess that bike is totally useless and I should just bin it.

Todd - Any plans to do another Trans Provence? We had fun!

Also, with Wyn on the team (cheers BTW) will there be a wheelie-specific GT bike coming, and how would one go about designing such a thing?

PS. Man-up and ride something other XC and road Wink

I'd like to do another TP...if Ash is willing to let me! Unfortunately I was not feeling fit enough to enter for 2016, plus the new dates were a potential conflict for a major work event. Maybe in 2017 Wink

Ok, this got me thinking of some other awesome shows i've seen in the past couple years...

Bomb the Music Industry - (day 1 of 2) final show at some Polish meeting hall in Brooklyn. The Slackers opened. BTMI played like every single thing in their portfolio. It was good. Jeff is super good.

Cursive - Saw them at Bowery Ballroom. Damned it was good. Sold out show. packed. Tight. Rad.

Joyce Manor - Every time I see these guys i am impressed. I saw them last winter at some tiny bar in Amityville, Long Island. Sing songy pop punk goodness.

The Movielife - What can I say? It's Long Island. It's emo. They played another reunion show at Irving Plaza last spring. They were on it!
