Police discovered over 1000 bikes hidden in a flood control tunnel in Orange County. There is debate about how the bikes got there, whether they are stolen or related to the homeless encampment that was recently removed by local officials about 2 miles away . Regardless of the origin, it's a massive pile of bikes. By looking at the photos, it appears these are mostly low-quality bikes (compared to what the average Vital reader would ride) that are in non-working condition.

Spom-dawg needs to update the readers on what the end result of this junker stash is..........Does the city take it straight to the landfill ? Recycle the metal? Shipped in a container to Bikes for Africa? Or does it go to a unclaimed theft auction , where some pawn shop bike store buys all of it for $200 bucks, rebuilds 300 bikes into working condition and resells them for ~ $200 bucks a piece ? Dry

considering the way they're stacked in those trucks, it almost seems like landfill/recycling. checking serial #'s on each bike against theft reports is highly unlikely here and even sorting the bikes out to see if any are actually worth putting in to auction seems like a major undertaking.

i'll see if i can find anything out.

Wow...that's a hoarding mess of a very illegal and expensive nature.

Shame if that all goes to waste - at least if it all get scrapped it goes back into the cycle (sorry, bad pun).
Wonder if someone could could ask to take them on a charity project as mentioned above?
