Ok genuine question: how much money is saved by having the 2 inner studs being plastic instead of a screw like the rest? I know that location is gonna be the least prone to pedal strikes, but it still makes me nervous that if you break one off or wear it down you're SOL. It doesn't seem like it would be that much more expensive to make them all metal.

Solid questions and something I've wondered having ridden primarily Deftrap pedals for a while now. From what I understand, if the inner pins were drilled through the platform and replaceable it would create a potential weak spot in the platform. Of the 8+ pairs I've had, I've probably scrapped off a handful of plastic pins and about triple as many outside, leading-edge metal pins. Which are replaceable (thank goodness).

Been on a few pairs and never busted up the plastic pins. For that matter not sure I have replaced those pins on any pedals.

Broken 3 of the 4 plastic ones off that are in front of the spindle on the underside of the pedal. I only noticed because you asked. A year of solid riding and I’ve replaced the metal pins recently. Can’t say I’ve noticed any change in grip level with the plastic ones missing (5 are still there though).
