Hello Vital MTB Visitor,
We’re conducting a survey and would appreciate your input. Your answers will help Vital and the MTB industry better understand what riders like you want. Survey results will be used to recognize top brands. Make your voice heard!
Five lucky people will be selected at random to win a Vital MTB t-shirt.
Thanks in advance,
The Vital MTB Crew
Switched from BMX to MTB somewhere around '95 after I demoed a Mountain Cycles San Andreas at Northstar CA. Always had some kind BMX and townie bike as I went through all of these.
Since then:
Past:
Department store bikes: 16" kids bike, 20" kids bike, larger 20" kids bike, 24" Schwinn "mtb".
2018 Giant Talon 3
2021 Marin Rift Zone 2
2021 Marin Alpine Trail XR
Current:
2022 Forbidden Druid V1 w/ Cascade link and 160 Lyrik
2023 Marino Custom hardtail w/ 160 Lyrik, 27.5 wheels, and sliding dropouts for single speed or w/ drivetrain
2016 KHS 4 Seasons 1000 Fatbike
2010 Kona Shonky DJ
1999 Giant XTC SE2 xc mtb converted to 650b gravel bike with drop bars, 1x drivetrain, and dropper post
1993? Trek 930 Singletrack cruiser x-bike with bmx style bars and stem, 1x drivetrain.
Since 2005: (* marks as sold)
2003 Kona Stuff hardtail* (first real mtb, after 2 walmart mtbs...)
2005 .243 freeride frame*
2004 Norco A-Line*, kept it for a week, such a POS
2005 SWD Crazy-8* (best dh frame, should have never sold it)
*stopped riding mtbs for a couple years while moving to Montreal and rode mostly street bmx
2011 Rocky Mountain Soul* (cheap hardtail that got me back into xc riding
2009 Santa Cruz Superlight* (replaced the hardtail frame, most fun 100mm, 26" xc bike)
2013 Kona Operator* (broke 4 rear shocks, most fun downhill bike ever)
2014 Kona Process 111 (best bike ever, had more than 10 000km on it before it cracked, did the megavalanche and such on it!)
2015 Kona Jake The Snake* (first road/gravel bike)
2016 Trek Stache 5* (not sure why I bought this, probably thought it could replace a fat bike, kept it for 5 months)
2016 Trek Boone* (was convinced a carbon cx bike with front thru-axle would make me faster...)
2017 Trek Domane SL5* (made the mistake of buying the rim brake version, first carbon road bike)
2017 Surly Disc Trucker (built up as a commuter, used as a gravel bike, road bike, mtb, etc... bike I kept the longest)
2018 Kona Process 153 CR* (first 27.5 bike, aggro geometry was really fun)
2020 Kona Process 153 CR/DL 29"* (same as before but 29er, got a good deal on it after cracking the 111)
2020 Cannondale Supersix Evo* (first non-grandpa geometry road bike)
2022-2023 Forbidden Dreadnought (best big bike ever, feels like geometry and such plateaued after this)
2023 Specialized Epic Evo 7 Comp* (most fun small travel bike, fit was a bit weird so just recently sold it...)
I now only have my Dreadnought, bmx and Surly. Will look into a small bike next year.
