Thanks. I removed the anodizing of the cranks with sodium hydroxide (drain cleaner) by brushing it on the surface, waiting a bit and then wiping and washing it off. I didn't want to submerge it fully into that stuff, since Shimano cranks are hollow and it might cause some structural damage. Then just regular sanding starting with about 240-600 grit sandpaper and going up to 2000 grit. Some crevices are really hard to get to, so it's not perfect if you look really closely.
