For myself I'd like to think it's a performance thing but it is ALSO an "looks" thing. Matched tires and suspension just feels and looks right to me. That's why I never understood when big companies like Santa Cruz mix suspension brands on their stock builds, ugly!!

It's a known known that your bike will underperform if you mismatch front and rear suspension, just like with tires.
