Thanks Zac. Yep, I'm a big fan of Zerode and their approach. Also check out Deviate with the high pivot and the Pinion. I think the other option at the minute is Effigear. Their Blackbird looks promising and I've seen some interesting things from Starling using that system. It's coming and systems will keep getting lighter and more refined, I'm sure.

Interesting, you are a brave man taking on something like this! I have been waiting to see if big manufactures get on with doing a gearbox bike. They seem to have come and gone over the years but never really caught on. The zerode bikes are promising, I think it will take more bikes like this to get people to start changing their minds and take notice.

Ah, right. That's why I asked what you meant by "based on". I thought you meant just inspired by or copied or something like that. Yes, there's a donor frame in there. The additional parts are formed with a foam core and then wrapped with the composite. "cold cure". Honestly don't know what the donor frame was originally. I think it came from a Planet X clearance sale of prototypes and samples so it had no decals or markings on it but I doubt it's a Marin.

Did you build the front triangle from scratch, too? It looks really good for garage work.

Back in the day I got to ride a Brooklyn Machine Works Supertrucker which has a similar set up but weighed twice as much and had twice the travel.

No, there's no Marin in there. What do you mean by based on? The suspension mechanism is a single pivot with a link driven shock. The design is just based on getting the unsprung mass down and the Alfine as low as possible...with space for a bottle 😉.

Thanks. It's fixed gear to the rear wheel (which is actually a 20 mm maxle front wheel). The freehub is in the Alfine. The rotor is attached to the Alfine in the usual way. The chain drives a sprocket mounted to the rotor. So it works in the same way a fixie rider brakes the rear wheel. Make sense?

Love it! How does the brake bit work?

Thanks. The brake works just fine. It's more of a less direct feel and it's pretty reliant on good chain tension but there's no way it can skip or wind up. It's a one to one direct drive. You can get a bit of stutter as the tension in the chain "bounces" a little but it's something you get used to and becomes just as effective as a regular mounted brake.

Wow what a cool build with really cool ideas! What is the braking like on the rear? Is it powerful enough, does the chain skip or wind up, or do any other odd things happen?

its.wilkoed on Instagram has some more bits and pieces. I keep thinking I should put a blog together but never get round to it. Never sure who'd be interested in seeing it to be honest.

Are Atlas cranks notably wide? I've tried Descendents, XOs and Saints all in 83 mm flavour but they don't clear enough width. The Husselfelts are very straight from the pedal and only taper for the last third of the crank arm.
