E-bike talk: not tech rumor derailment

Shimano has released more details about the new EP810 motor system, and I compiled everything into another forum here (I know, another forum, but its mostly for long-term discussion) - https://www.vitalmtb.com/forums/hub/shimano-ep810-motor-details-discussion-debate

Here is are key bulelt points -

  • Motor weighs 2.3 kg, saving 500 g over the previous EP801.
  • Maximum torque increases from 85 Nm to 100 Nm.
  • Peak power increases from 600 W to 750 W.
  • Lighter than both Bosch CX Gen 5 (2.82 kg) and Avinox M2S (2.59 kg).
  • Supports cadence up to 160 RPM.
  • Redesigned internal structure aims to reduce mechanical noise.
  • Magnesium motor cover with integrated cooling fins improves heat dissipation.
  • New 720Wh battery weighs 4.1 kg. Only the new 720Wh battery supports the EP810's full 750W output.
  • Despite saving 500 g at the motor, the heavier battery offsets much of the weight reduction.

New Motor Features

  • AUTO ASSIST: Automatically adjusts motor support based on terrain and gradient.
  • AUTO SHIFT Gen 3: Improved automatic shifting algorithm with adjustable cadence preference directly on the bike.
  • Assist Remain: Smooths power delivery when pedal input becomes uneven.
  • Assist Carry Over: Maintains assistance briefly after pedaling stops, with adjustable duration.
  • Hill Hold: Helps prevent the bike from rolling backward when stopped on steep climbs.
  • Lift & Shift: Allows riders to shift into a lower gear while stopped on a climb using the Walk Assist controls.

Electronics & Connectivity

  • New integrated SC-EN700 top-tube display.
  • Battery percentage is now displayed.
  • Wireless three-button assist switch reduces cockpit clutter.
  • New SHIMANO CONNECT app allows system customization, firmware updates, and ride tracking.
  • New D-FLY+ wireless protocol offers faster data transmission and improved security. D-FLY+ is not backward compatible with previous D-FLY systems.
  • Updated handlebar-mounted SC-EM810 display remains available.

That's mostly pretty good but the battery just kills it. 720wh @ 4.1kg is just not cutting it in 2026/27 I'm afraid. Look at what Gobao will be able to offer for comparison.

Seems as though a lot of brands will be going with their own proprietary battery, so I don't think the OE battery is an issue really. Otherwise I think it's probably exactly what most people need from a motor, even if it's not what most people want.

Wasn't one of the issues with the original EP8 system the fact that it was open standard?  Rather than put in good batteries, brands would put in whatever battery met their budget/design that were either too small, too heavy, or too failure prone.  Then if there was a failure with the battery, you basically had to hope that the bike company bought extras because Shimano sure as hell wasn't going to help you get a 3rd party battery.
