Hey yall!

I have a question about the Norco Sight Gen 5 and its extra linkages you get if you buy a frameset. Originally I was running this bike with in the mullet configuration with the 27.5 rocker link and the 27.5 shock mount tabs. Now it was fine, except the rear end was short. I didnt love that.

So I got the grand idea of putting the 29er rocker linkage on the frame and keeping the 27.5 shock mounting tabs on the bike with the 27.5 wheel. To my surprise and not, it made the bike a lot more progressive and the rear end longer. This is a pro for me, as RockShox forgot to manufacture enough Vivid Air tokens. At least thats what my LBS says.

However, it had me wondering, What changed in this alteration? Is there more travel technically, or is there less? If I ran the 27.5 rocker link, with the 29er mounting tabs, would I get a regressive curve to my bike? I know the chainstay length is near the same as a 29er setup (my size 2 measures at 430mm now instead of 424). My head angle slackened a little and BB dropped a smidge. But the bike is still completely rideable because of the mile high stock BB.

I guess Im asking what happens when you mix up these linkages, if anyone can answer that.

I like this bike now with the linkages mismatched, however, something feels off, aside from my new Vivid coming with very little oil inside. I cannot do kinematics math. I need help.

Thank you!

I'd actually love to know the answer to this as well if any of the illustrious Vital enginerds were so inclined

I may give this a shot on the current rig!

Can you fit a 29 with the 27.5 rocker?

Unsure, I dont have a spare 29 rear wheel. I did swap it back because it was pretty slack for the terrain in my area. But if you have some steep hills, it turns it into a weapon.

I don’t have the dimensions for both the mullet and 29 Sight set ups so can’t comment with 100% certainty. That said, typically mullet links on Horst bikes makes them less progressive. The lower shock mount position can be used to control progression. I would assume the mullet rocker link makes it less progressive and the lower shock mount is then used to offset that so that the mullet set up and 29 set ups have similar leverage curves. If that is all true, it would mean running the 29 link with the 27.5 lower shock mounts would indeed make the bike more progressive than the standard 29 or 27.5 set ups. The 27.5 link with 29 shock mounts would be less progressive, but I don’t think it would alter the curve so much that it would become regressive. I’ll try and find the dimensions for the 29 set up since that’s what I don’t have. Or at least approximate it. Then I can give a better answer.

Thank you for the input! There is definitely a perceivable difference, but I did not know if it had anything to do with change in travel or actual kinematics.
