Hello guys, I’m running Magura mt7 brakes. I have been having an issue with the front & rear pads rubbing on the rotors, both rotors are Magura MDR p 203 mm.
After hours of tweaking, I eventually got them to stop rubbing, not a single tinggg.. very nice the wheel would spin under its own weight.
all good I thought, well that was until I pulled the lever and gave the wheel a spin, the annoying rubbing noise had returned, this time it was worst that it was before… OMG frustrating isn’t the word!
can any of the guys using Magura mt7’s chime in and give me any tips, anything I can do? It’s becoming ridiculous now, I can’t get out, I’m constantly trying to tweak the pads so they don’t rub!
thanks in advance
I’ve never been able to get mine to be completely silent. It’s kind of annoying but I love them for everything else so I got over it.
My technique for centering pads is to set everything up Almost tight, but with just enough slack for the caliper to easily move. Then spin the wheel gently and slowly grab the brake. Then with the brake still on, just Slightly tighten the caliper bolts just enough to keep it in place. Then spin the wheel and look down through the caliper to see how even it is. If it's not perfect, loosen one bolt at a time and move that end of the caliper to center it. Repeat if necessary on the other bolt. Once you're happy with the position, very gently tighten the caliper bolts a little bit at a time, one then the other and repeat until they are tight enough to ride.
I'm not familiar with modern Maguras, so hopefully you can see down through the caliper to do this. Otherwise I guess you'd have to look along the rotor to use the same technique.
This all assumes that your rotor is not bent. But again, by looking down through the caliper, you can also see where the rotor is bent and correct it as needed. I designed but never got around to building a tool out of and old cut up caliper designed to mount to a truing stand and allow visual inspection of a rotor and provide space for a straightening tool. Get on it Park!
Also... If the pistons have gotten sticky they should be lubed with brake fluid so they move evenly when the lever is compressed.
Is this after putting a fresh set of pads in? Or are your pads about roached? I get slight rub before I have bed in my breaks and I will also get it when my pads are on life support.
Big Bird has great advice. Assuming you don't have any stuck pistons and your pads are healthy try this;
Push all your pistons in.
Line your caliper up so you have equal space on both sides.
Squeeze your leaver a bunch. This will get your pistons into their resting position, some will be slightly further out then others. That is ok.
Slightly loosen up your bolts and re-align the caliper so it doesn't rub.
If its fresh pads now go bed them in. After this I normally have zero rub.
Lastly don't over think it. Your caliper doesn't have to be dead center. Your breaks can have an ever so slight rub and it wont effect your ride. What you hear in the stand you normally cant hear out on the trail.
Don't worry about having your caliper dead center.
been heavily discussed and accepted that Magura brakes rub.
Ive had some luck in the past with using plastic shim stock to get the caliper to sit even off the rotor. Cut a couple strips and run them in the gap between the rotor and pad, tighten caliper.
a little update
they are virtually brand new, I have rode them maybe 20-30 miles, I ride with buds so I don’t head them rub but I feel the drag + extra effort needed in pedalling too!
I’d have the pads equal spacing on both sides in the stand, no noises, 0 drag, the wheel would spin forever!
The second I’d pull the lever, them would completely close up, I’d watch them, even tried the paper trick (didn’t work) spin and the f rubbing would be straight back, absolutely mind numbing man.
Pads are OEM, like I said virtually brand new brake set.
last night I eventually got them to where the noise is minor, the best I’ve had them so far after pulling the levers, at this point i think I will leave them and quit while I’m ahead.
few questions
Pads slipping a little, first thought was my headset being loose, nah it wasn’t , Wheel clicks, and shudders a little under harsh braking, pads shifting 🤷🏻♂️
Does it and the minor rubbing go away after a while?
how long to bed brake in normally and best way?
someone mention Magura rubbing has been done to death, any links ?
Appreciate the replies, thanks guys 🙏

One thing I've noticed with the MDR rotors is because they are two pieces sometimes you get play between the carrier and the braking surface. This can account for the pads slipping sensation you are talking about. If you lock the front brake and rotate the front wheel you can see the play in the little dovetail joints on the rotor. That said I've never felt that it adversely affected a ride or braking in a real world situation.
I’ll check, makes sence! Appreciated!
I have rotors to where they only rub in one place, noise is at a minimum, will this disappear on its own ones everything is bedded in??
