Hello. Was wondering if anyone would be able to help or point me in the right direction I was servicing the entire fox shock and my wonderful, large dog decided to go redrum and knocked the table over, which had all the parts on. I’ve serviced it before, but the issue now is the boostvalve shim stack went flying. So shims are all out of place. Anyone have an image or can help with what order they go. It’s a Fox Float RP23 Boostvalve rear shock. It is tuned as follows. Rebound is XL, velocity is L and boostvalve is 150. And yes, I know this stinks and I feel real stupid. But hey he’s my pup. Haha. Thanks in advance.
unfortunately fox's service guides only go back to 2014 and the old docs on RP23 were very vague.

reach out to fox and kindly ask if they can share the shim schematic?
That sucks but good luck!!
Thanks. I have tried asking them. Super nice. They gave me the same info. I think their cust serv people are newer and just don’t have the years experience to answer this ? I did ask if they could ask around to see if anyone with more experience had that info. They would t do it. I’ve dealt with customers for almost 30 yrs now in my career, and they don’t ranks very high in my book.
let me ask you your opinion. If I were to set these up based off other images I’ve seen with the same shock just a diff tune. For ex, Lower rebound and higher boostvalve. (Velocity is the same ). What would happen? Thx
I guess I should add I understand there may be some diffences with the number and size shims, but overall, would it just plain now work? Haha Nothing to loose. I can always buy a new one off QBP
I would check with Push Industries who tuned RP23's for years, or Traction Works in Portland, Oregon. Traction Works specializes in rebuilding and tuning every suspension component under the sun. One of them could probably help you with diagrams or steer you in the right direction. At the very least, you could send them a picture of your shims laid out in the order of your best guess and they could tell you if you're on the right track.

Thanks I chatted with Push. As you prob know they stopped doing rebuilds except their own. That cust serv person said he didn’t have that info. I’ll be trying again tomorrow to get a diff person and see. I’m sure someone there could help. And I didn’t have traction info. Thanks again for that. Appreciate it
Yeah Push haven't worked on other brands shocks in a very long time so I wouldn't try them again, its kind of a waste of yours and their time.
The RP23 Boost valve is almost identical to the CTD boost valve so you should be able to get some useful info from the CTD docs - https://www.ridefox.com/fox17/help.php?m=bike&id=77
I can tell you for one thing the CL tune has no bending shims on the compression side that would sit directly against the boost valve (100% boost valve for compression damping), and the check valves are usually just a couple of shims of different sizes so whatever is leftover will be the rebound stack. Likely only 2 shims the same diameter.
Are you able to give us a list of the parts you scooped up?
You will need to get the total height correct, and the right clamp shims in the right place or it will be very non-functional. I'll check if I have any more resources that might help though
RIsse Racing in Oregon still services RP23s. They may be able to help you out. Their website looks like it's straight out of 1999, but they're legit.
Thanks for the info guys. Truly appreciate it. I’ll check what I have and send a pic. Feel like an idiot. I was pissed off but love the pup. So that didn’t last long. Be back in touch. Thx
I want a photo of the dog lol
shim stacks and shocks are replaceable, the love from Man's best friend is on a level that transcends any material possession.
Yeah. Thanks. They are replaceable for sure. Don’t know which order they go. Haha. He’s a 7 yr old lab. He had a stroke a year ago. We never dreamed he make it back the way he did. He still has some mobility issues in his back end. But overall he’s doing well.
I didn’t lay them all out I just stacked them from my declining memory. 😃. Funny how I took pics and video even once it was broken down before starting. And I never got a good clean look of the boostvalve shim stack area. I’m rather upset with myself. Anyway, I’m sure a better eye then mine will spot if I’m all needed up. Thanks.
On the topic of old crappy shocks....
I serviced a pre boost valve RP2 recently and the piston has huuuuge compression ports with a big plate on them backed by 3 belleville washers (no shims) and qty3 teeny tiny maybe 2mm rebound ports.
No wonder those things rode like moist turds.
Found this picture in an old MTBR thread and its super close to what yours should be, the only difference is less rebound shims (this one is apparently RTM) and there might be an extra spacer shim (the thick, roughly 10mm OD washers) which can go amongst any of the other sets of spacer shims, but probably above the rebound stack/under the check valve
Well I owe you a nod, traction turned out to be a savior. They went over and beyond and looked up an image in their fox rebuilt book based off my tune. And then sent me a copy. So I have the layout and am looking forward to finishing the build this weekend. I’ll report back when it’s all finished. 🥃 cheers.
Awesome! The folks at Traction Works are the best. Glad they were able to help you solve your super obscure old shock problem!
