This morning I received the following email from Kenneth Lee about trying to get Missy Giove to the Windham World Cup. Check it out.
------------------------------
So here's the deal.

Missy , a native NY gal, is back for the Windham WC DH with a National Team spot. We feel like this is an opportunity to generate a lot of press noise and groundswell of social media interest hopefully feeding back excellent spectator.

Reality is, Missy back to NY is a hell of a nice story for all of us that got into the sport back in 1990-2000. Now we are in our 40's, at peak $ earning power. Our penchant for the nostalgia of our youthful mtb adventures is strong. We don't know who the new fast heroes are. Tempt us back to the sport with Missy and let her introduce us to the current crop of heroes.

Missy Giove has been off the bike now for the better part of 8 years plugging away at normal life like all of us. Her partner of 10 years is currently in treatment for cancer and though the process is going well, there is serious is some discussion of legacy. Of wanting to see Missy returning to race and the public eye once again as a sort of triumphant joyous blast.

As you recall, Missy's frenetic energy and absolutely wide open riding style is electrifying. I watched her on multiple sections of the Snowshoe GRT course and in spite of her lack of time on the bike, she'sHi Mark

So here's our proposal.

Bring Missy back for the Windham WC DH with a National Team spot. In return, the press friendly noise and groundswell of social media interest will feed back excellent spectator and media opportunity.

Reality is, Missy back to NY is a hell of a nice story for all of us that got into the sport back in 1990-2000. Now we are in our 40's, at peak $ earning power. Of wanting to see Missy returning to race and the public eye once again as a sort of triumphant joyous blast.

As you recall, Missy's frenetic energy and absolutely wide open riding style is electrifying. I watched her race a rental bike on multiple sections of the Snowshoe GRT course and in spite of her lack of time on the bike, she's 100% still Missy.

She's fit. Absolutely fearless, unpolished, bigger off jumps, and faster through rocks than anyone else. She still sucks at low speed/thinkers terrain. She also struggled with the 5 minute course remembering all her lines, as well as, physically in the last 2 minutes. Windham is a 2-3 minute course. She will have a mechanic and a properly tuned bike for Windham. The fact is, Missy still has the raw talent and the bravery to hold her own on a fast, shorter course. She believes that the Windham suits her well. We believe her.

The barrier to this 11th hour gambit, is the fact that she needs a National Team allocation to race.

Mark, and the Windham WC organizers saw value in this situation and granted this favor to the Missile. She gave it all for us back in the day and still, absolutely still, has that electricity. She still the most fun on camera and interviews. And her riding is still singular.

Please , please run with this story.

I sincerely appreciate your time and consideration in this matter.

Ive always said, theres no more real womans that ride like mens in the actual circuit. The last two were anne c.c. And missy giove.

Those 2 are old, but they can still destroy the field.

Now, missy... Even if ur old, you can kick their asses.

I send u a lot of love and i hope some team hire u

Missy would get crushed. I'm sorry to say it, but how far behind Jill Kintner was she at the WV race. Jill isn't even a consistent WC podium finisher. Prove me wrong, but I think Missy would barely make the top-20 cut. It may be best to just reminisce about "back in the day" on this one instead of seeing your hero get smacked around by kids that were not yet born when she was dueling ACC. Oh yeah, as press coverage, are you sure mainstream coverage of Missy (if any did materialize) would be a positive for the sport? What angle do you think they would take?

All of that aside, there are zero American women racing the MSA World Cup and only two juniors racing it. The women's side of the sport definitely needs something, but I don't think it's more Missy.

"Epic" - you're trippin dude....regardless of her placement it would be sick to see her shred - her wife has cancer and wants to witness her race DH. Tell me it wouldn't be rad to see her shred a world cup to make her wife happy and to just go tear shit up. I rode with her a couple of years ago and she is still better than a shit ton of girls on the circuit. Just cause she might not be podium material isn't grounds to discredit her. Don't be part of what's wrong with this sport - support the people who paved the way.

I started biking in the early 90's and watching Missy ride was awesome. I even named my cat after her. Sure I would love to see her ride the course for her herself, for her wife, to raise awereness of cancer, for publicity etc, but to think she would be able to compete at the top level of world cup competition after such a long sabbatical sounds slightly naive to me. Maybe even a bit disrespectful to the other competitors...but I guess that was always Missy's style. Wild!

We too have a cat named Missy. I would love to see this happen. But you know that the media will just pick up on the weed thing... Perhaps nowadays that just doesn't matter?

@IanCollins - great counter to @Epic. I hate all this "cool guy" talk as well. Anything that brings excitement and flavor to the sport is positive.Gives more people more things to go crazy about on race day.

Thanks dude for your words. On with the Missile!!!!

Here's my humble opinion (for what it's worth)....
At this time, the number of female participants in mountain biking is a bit of a concern to me. The general male "banter" towards women riders on forums is a bit of an embarrassment to me. I am one hundred percent sure that there's nothing, absolutely nothing but good things that would come from having Missy back on a bike in the public eye again.
Even on here there's still some negativity to be found. Haters gonna hate but Damn!!! If we were to follow through on @Epic's janky train of thought, Peaty should retire and Palmer's got no business being involved as a mentor?

^ This.
One correction though, only Women's World Cup DHracing is in red alert mode if you ask me, I have watched it for 25 years, and it's as bad as it's ever been-in regards to future talent rising up. This is no disrespect to the handful of ladies crushing it with amazing talent, but, the 'new' rider pool is small. That is also no discredit to women mountain bikers, because that number is through the F-ing roof (Our sales of TLD women's MTB product is up over 100% this year, our biggest growth category).
So, all that being said, Missy coming to the race is good, she will not be competitive for podium or top 10 spots I do not think, but, to see her out there will be awesome and through the alert I got from Ian Collins, we are next day airing some kit, helmet, protection today, TLD is proud to have her still in the TLD family.

So good to see her back at the races, regardless of the result, she sure hasn't lost that talent and guts.

If theres one thing this weekend has shown, it is I genuinely dont care how she performs, or even if she races or how she is involved, but all i do know is that I want to see her back in the world cup scene for good, her energy and stoke is just so infectious, she just seems to brighten up everybody around her.
The sport always need characters, there are few bigger than hers.
It really was heart warming to see the the sport and the community welcome back an old friend quite like it did, I think the entire paddock was buzzing to see her back.

So cool of Ian and Cam to sort out a ride for her! The MTB community spirit truly is alive and strong!

Top 3 on the top split on a bike she's never ridden. Pretty sure she will be top US rider again if she gets a couple more runs in. @stiksandstones and @iancollins you flipping rock!
