rocky roads has an interesting article up about internet broadcast rights for 2012 world cups. read it here: http://www.rockyroadsnetwork.com/2011/09/30/uci-mtb-world-cup-negotiati…

the basics:
- there are 4 (maybe 5) bidders for 2012 broadcast rights
- contract will be signed in mid-november
- the uci is actually the one that films everything and they provide the live stream to broadcasters who push it out to the interweb
- sounds like a live broadcast of some variety is a sure bet for next season

Pat, the sprint eliminator event is basically cross-country four-cross.

I hope the bid goes to Freecaster,
they've done a very good job with it here in the US.
Having to pay for world's access is no big deal to me...
Whoever broadcast's the WC downhill has to keep Warner as the Commentator,
dude's funny, knows the riders and the sport.
Trippy Tippie was begging for the job on air at World's, pathetic,
dude has a screw loose thinking he's a comedian or that he EVER raced a WC DH season.
Hey can have CrankWorks, but WC DH is a diferent beast...

Still think it's time for DH to create it's own governing body & race series...

You made me click a RockyRoads link, dammit. :-) Oh well, at least I'm comfortable in the knowledge that I'm just one of a million visitors... Wink

Some things to note:

-still millions of visitors, and no relevant advertising. Wow, they must have really deep pockets to ignore all that revenue potential.
-Still no editorial coverage worthy of the name. Even this particular piece leaves a lot to be desired in terms of journalism (and English).
-Some undertones in that article hinting at shortcomings with Freecaster...they are already setting us up for the disappointment of watching the rights go to comebody else ("they introduced a fee-based model and scared people away"..."Freeaster is one of the bidders that likes to keep the price low") - that is really not how one is supposed to be talking about a so-called serious bid process. Sick

I wouldn't be surprised to see DH coverage in 2012 turn into a boring 30 minute show a la Eurosport 2, with crap commentary. But here's to hoping I'm wrong.

This is interesting.

Check out this excerpt:

"According to Mountain Bike Rider, the split between Freecaster.tv and the UCI occurred when the UCI increased the amount of royalties it was demanding for the continued right to broadcast. Freecaster CEO Ray Dulieu said the amount was triple the asking price. Rockyroadsnetwork.com has replaced Freecaster as the official World Cup partner broadcaster."

As far as I was aware, there is a still a bid going on for the broadcasting rights, with 3 or 4 companies still hoping to win. They were to announce the winner in November. Unless that was a freudian slip of course...
