Seeing as how we generally always end up doing what moto has done long ago anyways I wonder how a sized down battlecross or MX33 would feel on an MTB. Moto has way more money and time in tire testing and development!
Totally agree, its maybe why i am loving the Magic Mary's. Its not quite what you mean i think, but good ol square edged knobs grip.

Doesn't what you want already exist and they're called mud spikes? Perhaps a Shorty for dry conditions? I'm not Moto, so I don't know.

I bought a pair of those new Versus tires and I love them for here in southeast Idaho. My bike came with DHF and DHRIIs, so I had no complaints, but when the rear wore out I decided to try something different and I went with the Versus on impulse after reading a review somewhere. I've got no complaints so far and I've been on them for a month or two.
I bought the DH casing Versus tires front and back and I’m a believer. Faster rolling than what I had before (Snap Flow Trail) snd they aren’t wearing too quickly. Good price, good quality, cool guys at the company, I’m sold.

Any has experience with the DHR2 Maxxgrip up front on winter conditions?

For a moto-style tyre, the perfect option from the Schwalbe stable is the Eddy Current, surely? It's been interesting seeing DH pros running them, but I'm sure marketing managers aren't fans of it. They do like their product categories.

I pretty much only run Maxxis Minions on my bike now. Either 2.5 or 2.35 (although I might go bigger now I’m back on a hardtail. I used to swap them out for Wet Screams or Swamp Things in the winter but here in the UK I just can’t be arsed with it now I’m tubeless. Currently my hardtail has a 2.6 WTB Trailboss on the back as I had two spare and wanted to swap off the worn Minion SS I was trying (not big enough volume).

Everything else I’ve tried either doesn’t feel right to me or punctures all the time.

Best front: Tioga edge 22 29x2.5. Bear rear: Vittoria agarro 29x 2.35. A dream running them together!

Maxis minion dhf front and rear. Ride single track in the dry only. I get zero front push, bike tracks fr and rear great. Rear traction is always predictable. Running 26 to 28 psi.
