Before this rule change was enacted, and ignoring protected riders, what were the best results ever posted by someone who qualified in position 61-80? Same goes for women with the change there (sorry I don't remember the numbers off hand). Excited to hear what the arm chair historians have to share!
For example: Privateer John Doe qualified 69th at Mt St Anne in 2013, but finished top ten in finals.
It looks like Logan Binggley - MSA - Qualified 80th - Finished 28th - Improvement 52 places.
Lourdes 2017 also had some interesting results.
Baptiste Pierron - Lourdes 2017 - Qualified 76th - Finished 29th - Improvement 47 places.
Alexandre Fayolle in the same race qualified 52nd and finished 1st an improvement of 51 places but is not the answer to your question.
I am sure some of the older mud races might have something similar.
1. Brendan Fairclough crashed in quali and finished 70-something at Pila in 2005, finished 3rd in the race
2. Mark Beaumont crashed and finished 77th in quali's in Vigo in 2007, won the race. Rain in the finals was a factor.
3. Adam Brayton qualified 80th at Champery, finished 6th. Rain in the finals was a factor, obviously.
Thanks to Alex Rankin and Rootsandrain.com for the help.
Champery 07, Peaty had an awful run and Lehikoinen deliberately went slow to qualify badly, they finished 1st & second. can't remember the exact qualy places though
Combined with Vigo the same year was the reason they changed to top 20 overall riders always going last
