First Ride: Leatt ReaFlex 6.0 Grips
Comfort and dynamic support on the menu as Leatt jumps into the components game.
LeattA

Leatt’s product catalog has been growing steadily ever since the company was first founded, and they’ve kicked off 2025 by introducing a cockpit line comprised of a grip and a handlebar – their first foray into the world of bike components. Leatt used their experience with the energy-absorbing ReaFlex gel from their protection line to give the new grips some vibration damping characteristics, and they’ve put a lot of thought into the rest of the design as well. Keep reading to learn more and get our very first impressions from the trail.

Initial Impressions

Starting from the outside, the ReaFlex 6.0 grip is elaborately designed, with several different zones that have been deliberately sculpted to meet specific functional requirements. The overall shape is tapered with the grip growing thicker towards the outside, and the ReaFlex 6.0 is available in either standard (31-33 mm) or thin (29-31 mm) sizes. A set of soft ribs provide comfort and grip for the thumb in particular, while a triangular half-waffle pattern ensures that your fingers have something to hold onto around the back. There’s a raised section (“bump pad”) under the palm area for extra support here. A single lock ring equipped with a 3-mm allen bolt secures the grip to the bar, and the upper TPR layer extends around the outer edge to offer extra protection both for your handlebars and the walls around you. The grips are available in four colorway (all shown here), and will retail for $29.99 USD (there’s also a handlebar x grip combo that should be available soon as well).

A deeper dive reveals more tech, in the form of a set of internal ReaFlex pads strategically placed to improve comfort and dampen vibrations. ReaFlex is a visco-elastic compound that Leatt also uses in a number of their protection pieces, one of those gel-like materials that hardens up and distributes energy when impacted.

On The Trail

We only just laid our hands on the new grips (pun fully intended), so these are just our first observations after a handful of rides. The top layer rubber chosen by Leatt is quite responsive to the touch, by virtue of being a little bit stiffer than many others in terms of the immediate tactile sensation under your hand. It’s like it manages to be both soft and dynamic at the same time. The overall shape works well, and the different sections do their jobs as intended, providing support and comfort in the right spots. Sometimes a grip with so many different design patterns can feel a bit “clunky” to the touch, but that is not the case here – all the edges are rounded off, and nothing feels out of place. We also salute Leatt for going with a sturdy lock ring and a 3-mm bolt, the grip does not seem prone to slipping on the bars at all, and the bigger bolt reduces the risk of stripping it when going ham on the wrenches.

The raised ribs under the thumb area are featured on many different grips in today’s market, and we always find that if the ribs are either too tall or too soft, they can interfere with grip stability a bit. Not so with the ReaFlex 6.0, these ribs are just the right size to work well without wobbling under pressure. What about those ReaFlex pads then? Well, without wanting to overestimate their importance, we have found the new grips very comfortable in action, despite being somewhat harder to the initial touch than some others. Seems like Leatt has struck a great balance between comfort and support – you’ll particularly enjoy these if you dislike any kind of vagueness that can sometimes be found in a softer grip. As for the overall size, the regular version we tested here feels pretty “average” for lack of a better term – they don’t feel thin but they’re also not for the meaty paws out there. Maybe Leatt will make a 33-35 mm tapered version in the future, here’s to hoping.

What’s The Bottom Line?

A grip is what you make it, and Leatt has put a lot into the development of their first-ever grip. They’ve spared no expense when it comes to materials and design, and the result is a high-performance grip that offers both comfort and control. We particularly appreciate that it seems to combine the best of two worlds – a certain hardness to the rubber that does not translate to any discomfort. If you like a direct connection with your bars but still value all-day comfort, give these a try, we think you’ll like them.

Johan loves bikes, which strangely doesn’t make him any better at riding them. After many years spent practicing falling off cliffs with his snowboard, he took up mountain biking in 2005. Ever since, he’s mostly been riding bikes with too much suspension travel to cover up his many flaws as a rider. His 200-pound body weight coupled with unique skill for poor line choice and clumsy landings make him an expert on durability - if parts survive Johan, they’re pretty much okay for anybody. Johan rides flat pedals with a riding style that he describes as "none" (when in actuality he rips!). Having found most trail features to be not to his liking, Johan uses much of his spare time building his own. Johan’s other accomplishments include surviving this far and helping keep the Vital Media Machine’s stoke dial firmly on 11.
