Kali first showed us their new Maya helmet in the middle of 2014, and they have now taken it to production. The Maya is a "deep coverage" trail or enduro helmet which much like other helmets from the brand features a multi-density foam shell with cones at the interface between the layers, designed to better dissipate impact energy. On the Maya, Kali has also pushed in the direction of making the foam softer. While helmets typically utilize a foam density between 100-120 g per cubic liter, the density in the Maya is around 70 g. Kali says that the benefit to using this softer foam is that it dissipates impacts faster and more efficiently.
The general design of the shell provides deep coverage in the back, and the Maya also sports a number of features like an integrated camera and light mount and a break resistant moto style visor. Other features include an antimicrobial liner with bug netting, Kali's floating dual closure system for easy adjustments, and twelve vents with internal channeling for ventilation. Comparing the production version to the prototypes we saw last year, the visor appears to have shrunk/moved, and there have been updates to the closure system.
The Maya is available in three colors (white, black, and of course "EnduroBro blue"). It weighs 350-grams, and will retail for $100 USD - that's good value and a very competitive price point in the trail helmet market, especially given how feature-rich the Maya is.
The Maya is shipping now. You can find more information on www.kaliprotectives.com. We'll leave you with this rad launch video featuring Jeff Kendall-Weed getting properly rowdy with his Maya.
