After replacing all the rear triangle hardware, greasing and tightening virtually every bolt and pivot, and screaming into the abyss, I've narrowed down this terrible creaking sound on my Canyon Torque AL 6 to the front shock bolt. I've removed it, applied grease, torqued properly, but it still creaks when there's even a touch of lateral pressure on the rear wheel.
Anyone experienced this on any bike, or have any ideas how to fix?
Creaks drive me nuts and can resonate through the frame making them hard to track down. I once spent an hour in the parking lot of a bike park trying to fix my creaking shock mounts only to find out it was the clutch on my derailleur. If you are sure it's that front shock mount, try pulling the mounting hardware apart and cleaning it, especially the inside of those nylon bushings (assuming it's a Fox shock) and reassemble clean with no grease. The bolt is supposed to lock the axle to the frame and all movement should be between the axle and those nylon bushings, which are self lubricating. The fit between the axle and bushings should be very tight, too tight to move by hand. If it's not, replace the shock hardware. Good luck and you have my sympathy!
Thank you so much, super helpful especially the reassemble with no grease part! Should the nylon bushings pull out fairly easily if I wedge something in there? Haven't disassembled a shock to that degree quite yet
Getting the axle out can be a chore as it should be a tight fit. Don't hammer it! Once the axle is out, the bushings are fairly easy to pry out with a fingernail or small screwdriver. Just be careful.
This worked like a dream! No more creaking, bike sounds brand new again. Appreciate your help!
I’ve switched to using bearings instead of shock bushings which helps. Fox makes some sizes and Real Work Cycling has some really good needle bearing kits. DH sign from Italy has good spherical option.
