And regarding the equations to find balance (FC: RC vs WB/2-RC)... there are not large differences in these approaches. Why you think a literal ratio scales "horrendously" is still beyond me, because that's what it does by definition. Your equation, OTOH, either gives results that vary by each size, or calls for extreme chainstay lengthening across sizes to maintain a...

The confusion is occurring because you're making wild exaggerations to underscore your point. You might also observe that you're the common variable in every bit of contention on this thread so far; perhaps the resolution has less to do with correcting others. The numbers on that open mould frame (Dengfu or whatever it is) would not result in hanging your...

Ah, now I get it. You just want the bike that we're all saying we don't want. Good news for you: every single bike being made is closer to 'C' than it is to 'B', in your examples. I think you're still wrong in telling me what I want, however: - The Nukeproof bikes do have the balance I'm looking...

Which reviews? I can find none so far. (Although this is a Dengfu open mould frame, and I'm sure I can find a review of that if I look hard enough). Ninjichor-- I still don't understand what you're actually looking for or where your numbers are coming from, with respect to a balanced bike. The numbers on this bike look...

Very interesting point. I experimented with this a few years back, and permanently changed my riding balance and style. But I never looked at it as effectively lengthening the amount of bike behind my center of gravity. I didn't realize that's what I was doing. I ride flats and experimented with Catalyst pedals at first and then adopted that foot...

I don't really take offense if Ninjichor wants to call the style of riding I'm aiming for, "defensive." That's certainly not how a spectator would describe it after watching me ride by on-course. I ride at the limit, and I'm looking to push the limit with a bike that requires less wasted mental & physical energy from me just to...

Transition’s ethos has always been “play” rather than “race” and their native trails are high in flow/berms, low in rocks/gnar. The promo videos for the Sentinel were mostly guys hitting huge, tractor made jump lines, which explains a lot. Also consider their mismatched travel design and heavily stuffed rear shocks that ramp up hard. You can juxtapose Transition with the...
Playfulness is an imprecise blanket cliche that gets used so often it means almost nothing anymore. Reminds me of "Climbs surprisingly well for a [xxx]mm travel bike." The general MTB public has been coached to believe that a short chainstay = "playful" through sheer repetition by product reviewers. That might mean the bike "manuals and kicks off of small jumps...
Might be a reference to my earlier mention of the SB5.5 (and SB6) as the last of the balanced Yetis, and the 130 & 150 have adopted the trendy long front/short rear design. I think Jeff's responses are spot on here. Ninjichor-- I'm also unable to follow your conclusion that Steve's math is wrong. Earlier you replied "that scales horrendously"...

1) I posted this thread years ago. Way before that video came out as a way to say "hey, this is what I'm finding". 2) I literally can't buy a bike that has the proportions I want. I already noted my solution (build my own seatstay). 3) I was chiming in here because I found that video to be very helpful, and someone else did resurrect this thread. 4) I'm in a unique position that I have tested a lot of bikes. I also ride more than most. Not saying that as some form of dick waving, but rather to...

Yes, so much so that the Vorpsrung video calls his bike (and riding style) out specifically. I know people like to point out that Sam is a freak, but that is painfully obvious and doesn't actually negate the point. He's constantly riding off camber lines that aren't even lines at all, and he's doing it with body positioning that looks...

Man I just look at what my hero is doing on his bike and copy that shit. So much less maths to nerd on though with forum fast numbers and lines to extrapolate

Sigh. Before anyone comments further PLEASE watch the Vorsprung video. If you don't spend the 10 minutes there we'll basically be debating the color of the sky, or similar. I did put a * on the title for a reason. Short chainstays do suck. But only on longer bikes that are intended for racing. If you are looking for the best dirt jump, 4x, BMX, park bike, road bike, townie bike, fixed gear bike this may not apply. I'm 100% after the best handling bike for those that prefer a longer reach **when standing**. This is my goal. This is...

“Coming from a dirt jumping background, I like to steer my bikes from the hip, not follow whatever the front wheel does. Just pretend you have a laser pointer in your bellybutton and point the bike wherever it goes. ” Steering from the hips is more easily achieved when the front wheel isn’t pushing from lack of weighting. I’m not...
This has been recognized in other sports-- that you use quite a bit of mental energy propping yourself up in extreme stances that vary greatly from a "neutral athletic position." The team physiologists starting arguing about it a lot in pro road racing about 5-7 years ago. And the trade off between fighting with a defensive guard vs. naturally/hands down...
"Prioritization of handling on super steep terrain, a fondness for rear wheel carves, and enjoying quick manuals would favour long fronts and short rears. A preference for monster trucking through dusty, fast, wide open trails would favour long fronts and long rears." I think the claim "short chainstays suck" is intentionally hyperbolic. What actually sucks is the lack of options...
