I agree as I've been MTBing since about 1993 . I still own and ride an 1992 Kona Hei Hei Titanium that's pimped out which is quite rare in itself . I've modernized it with a Microshift 10 speed and a SID Carbon Team fork but yes the Geometry going downhill is definitely facing forward and sketch , although these older bikes climb like you're on a stairmaster due to the geometry so they go uphill very well .
