Between my wife's bikes and mine, I've had three Shimano 12-speed derailleurs that arrived with sticking clutches (under-lubricated). Lubing them with the correct Shimano grease fixed that. If you get water ingress and the one-way roller bearing rusts - or if the roller bearing just craps out, replace the clutch mechanism. They're only $12 USD from Universal Cycles. And yes, oval chainrings seem to wear the Shimano clutches faster. I think I end up cleaning and lubing them (or just replacing them when I feel lazy) once a year or so. But that's all that's really necessary - the derailleurs...

Hi u can go 11 speed & have 30t by 46t , have xt 11 speed, climb about 2500 mtr weekly 3 or 4 rides & change the clutch twice on the winter bike & use one on the summer bike .. winter u can clean & grease the clutch only take 5 mins & new clutch is only £10...

To review this, I preface that my right knee hates any pad pressure. Tried several renditions over the years and anything that pushes my patella bone at all will cause joint pain in 10 minutes. Only pad prior to these that sat off my knee cap enough were Troy Lee Raids, which I still love but can get warm. Needed something cooler for the summer heat.
