Making thoughtful efforts in the areas surrounding the track where a rider will likely end up in a crash seems like a reasonable ting to do, and won't affect the racing at all. When I first started, my daughter wanted to put her hands all the way out on my grips. Aside from the obvious problems of trying to use the same grip space, this did give her plenty of leverage to turn the bars. I put some fabric athletic tape on the bars where I wanted her to hold, and all of a sudden everything got easier. She has much less leverage now, the tape keeps her hands from getting cold on the bar, and since she has her own grips, she actually wants to put her hands in the right spot...
