Maribor has hosted World Cup DH, World Cup ski racing, and Europa Cup ski racing (which is the feeder series to the world cup). I don't think the venue has an issue holding expensive events. I would guess this is specific to the iXS cup, and that the venue isn't forecasting a good return on this particular event. In short...

The slow divergence of things that look good on TV and things that are properly technical to ride is perhaps worthy of its own thread... From Rampage to Hardline to XC courses, figuring out what catches a viewer's attention and also fairly challenges riders seems to be an evolving field. Some parts of this XC course really excited me as a mountain biker, but those are different from what seem to be the showy features. I'm keen on the off-camber roots, the sharp punchy climbs, and the loose chute. Those bits I feel really take bike handling skill. Jumps and...

This video does a much better job of: showing what the track actually looks like; making it look like MTB; making me want to ride a bike. In this video you see an actual MTB trail, with a handful of awkward features you barely notice. Very similar to many trail venues out there in the wild. I just don't like...

I realize that most rock gardens and features are man-made, but when they look like that...it just feels weird, and more-than-manufactured. The 2-lane rack garden just seems problematic as mentioned above, but also that section of wood rounds - it looks cool on camera, but has anyone ridden something like that? It just seems different for the sake of different...

I sometimes wonder what makes you get up in the morning and say „I’m going to be the personification of the cliche creepy shitstain on humanity today“ but then again I probably don’t want to know

The formula is pretty simple, as many have already said. It's points/dollar, and that's it. It isn't points per pick, because the picks are unlimited as long as you stay under the budget. Picking the assumed winner for juniors is always a bad pick. Pick Asa if you want to, but he's 80k and he can only get you 60...

With all the talk about how Finn and Loic have the electronics on board and Jordan doesn't it got me thinking. Maybe Jordan doesn't have them because he is so inexperienced (relatively speaking). In the recent Inside Line short episode, Loic talked about how the it still isn't natural for him to use the buttons; it's an extra layer of...
A few good points being made above. There seems to be a bit of disagreement out there as to how much weight to put on your hands. and not just by us mortals on forums. There are several pros who have described their riding style as "off-the-back", where some pros (I remember a specific mention of Brian Lopes) have a...
I have to disagree. And you can easily prove it to yourself by standing on your feet and reaching your arms out in front of you. At full standing height, your hips are above your feet, and you are balanced. Now move toward a squat position. Your hips move back, your shoulders (and hands) move forwards, but you are still...

Since you can change up your team after semis, it seems like there is no reason to build a team until you know who's in the show. No incentive to pick a complete wildcard. Maybe all rider values go up 10k once semis start, just to incentivize picking someone early? Not complaining. I'm stoked to have the game to play...

I'm in total agreement with the 2 posts above. The general public (including me) can't appreciate the little variations in tricks that make certain tricks way harder than a similar-looking variation. You see this pop up after every single Rampage, where the public says X should have done better, and the judges say "no, because nuances you don't understand". So...

I used to race, and I liked the challenge of new trails or going faster on trails I knew. But now that I have kids, I'll ride anything just get out on the bike for a while. Same with skiing; I grew up racing, and only ever wanted to ski downhill. Now I will happily do a short XC ski...

I don't know if this is still the case, but Giant used to have basically 2 completely separate lines of bikes. They had a full line of budget bikes you would find at basic outdoors or sporting goods stores, and the high end line you would find at dedicated bikes shops. My initial assumption is that they will sell the...
Sounds like a lot of people want one more option: "Performance over looks, up to a point. Sometimes it's just too ugly" All the bikes I've owned have looked good (at least I thought they did at the time), even though I was mostly looking for performance and fit.

Taking into account how talented a rider must be to get to a competitive place in the world cups and how far the bikes have progressed, I would guess that it is 70% rider's mental ability, 20% rider's physical ability, and 10% differences in frame and component technology in the present day. I have no data to support those percentages other than gut feel. To expand on the guess above, I feel like a rider that's in a bad spot mentally will never be able to approach the track speed where they are at their physical limit, or the limit...

Let's say there is a perfect bike for a given rider's size/proportions and riding style, then they could get 100% of their potential from that bike. There is no bike that will make a rider better than their skills (mental and physical), but having a bike that doesn't fit will keep the rider from reaching their potential. So that is...

I seem to remember Richie Rude saying he lost around 25 pounds when he started working with Graves when he was switching to enduro. Loic wants to be the final EDR champion? Ok, ok. My understanding of the strength element in DH is really about the ability to take a big hit, not necessarily to intentionally plow through everything. I'm...
