BHowell Added a comment about feature Three Winning Runs from Rampage 2017 with Rider Commentary

10/22/2018 7:36pm
A few years back, when the site location had pre-built features, there would be more info out there. Now that Rampage has gone back to a more raw format, there isn't any pre-building to cover and share. In addition, the site is on full lockdown (riders and diggers only) for the first 5 days. Starting tomorrow, more media types will be allowed at the venue and we'll start to see more of the goods.

That's a good look at the course without any special production to it, good info before the live webcast. Thanks for doing that Gee.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Martin is the Team owner and he approached YT to be the frame supplier. I see it similar to the MS team, how it was MS - intense, MS- Evil, MS - Mondraker etc.

Bingo, we are on the same page here. A top level race program would go a long way to legitimize the brand and this new direction for them, much as YT did with their WC efforts. The dollar for dollar value is an interesting paradigm, I feel like we could unpack that for hours around a campfire, getting whisky drunk. I have a lot of thoughts on that, particularly given my prior role in the industry. Alas, this is not the place to discuss them. I'll leave you with this (before I too, go ride) the next time I'm in...

Darn Russ, that's a pretty rude thing to say...I had to make sure I wasn't on that Canadian site. I went to Park City, rode a bike, thought it was bitchin' so that's what I wrote. As contributors, we have day jobs and aren't lining our pockets with ad money, no tin foil hat conspiracies around these parts. For fun, you may enjoy looking around the internet and reading that other writer/riders loved this bike too. But yes, the name absolutely sounds like a pizza joint and we were told the grey is a near identical match to the Tundra/4Runner, effing...

Yo! Nice work on snagging a new rig! I honestly do not have any notes on what the specific pressures were nor do I remember. We started off by just using the chart on the back of the fork, though I found that to be a bit soft for my liking. My 2 cents would be to start with the recommended pressure and zero compression damping. Based on how that feels, add pressure or damping depending on how you like the bike to ride. You could even go lower on the pressure but bump up compression damping to prevent diving...

Solid observations indeed, let's get this cleared up. You are correct, the chart provided by Trek is a bit misleading with such a slack seat tube angle. In looking over my notes from the press camp, Trek did in fact steepen the actual seat tube angle by one degree, making it a hair over 75 degrees. The 78 notation in my article is a typo. Regardless of what the numbers say, the bike rode how it rode and was impressive on the climbs. For what it's worth,, you will see a review of a 78 degree actual, coming very soon...

i understand all of what you're saying and agree with the changing landscape. since you're new here (at least based on your sign-up date), dig into our past reviews. there are times when, despite being wined and dined at camps, products don't come away with glowing endorsements. our staff is experienced and they review the product, not the free beer. saying X is awesome because they treated us to a nice room at a resort wouldn't do us (or any editorial outlet) any good long-term because you would all see through it instantly. then we'd have no credibility, which means...

the first sentence of the article says "trek invited us to mammoth." i feel that's pretty transparent. like grambo mentioned, they hosted us. this is a long-time practice in any industry unveiling a new product for editorial consideration. additionally trek is NOT a current advertiser on our site. this may not be obvious unless you're really paying attention to the ads on our site. despite that lack of support from trek, we still used our own time and resources to attend their camp because we wanted to ride their new product (specifically the "updated products" also mentioned in the first...

You raise a really solid point and it is one that deserves clarification. If when we rode this bike, we said, "wow, what a great bike for $2,399," we would have said 4 or 4.5 stars. The fact that we rode it and it's a great bike for something that costs more, is a different story. There are rigs that cost over a thousand dollars more that are heavier, have lesser parts and are not as well rounded of a bike. It would be fantastic to throw a leg over a carbon model and see how it stacks up given...
