Although I've been a die-hard 29er rider ever since I got on one around 2008, I've been experimenting a lot with 29/27.5 mixed wheel size in recent years. The ride that a mixer gives you is pretty fantastic - very similar rollover capabilities to a 29er in a straight line, but quite a bit easier to throw into tight corners.

On this bike, the 29er front wheel paired with the ultra-sensitive derailleur-free rear suspension makes for a bike that practically accelerates through any rock garden. The 160mm 29" Lyrik gives the bike roughly a 63.5* head angle and a pretty tall front end, so I often use the travel adjust and drop the fork down to 130mm on climbs and more mellow terrain.

do you ever feel the seating position is too slack? especially with the raised front end?

Nope, not really! I did slam the seat forward to compensate, but even with the lifted front end, the seat tube angle is still pretty much within the range of modern mountain bikes. The STA on the stock Taniwha is about 74.5 degrees - on the steeper side relative to a lot of bikes on the market. I've effectively taken a degree or more off that number, depending on exactly where that slammed seat puts you. Slacker than average, but nothing drastic.

This is so nice. I like the experimentation with the 29 front wheel. Might just be the future. I might just want a similar build! Nice job!

Have you thought about running one some dual crowns like the new mrp bartlett? i have my diamond set to 150 but could run a dual crown at 170 at almost the same axle to crown length

Are you still riding your Taniwha in this configuration? What's your long-term review?
Mine is set up with a 160 DP Pike but I also sometimes run it with a 180 DP Lyrik... Descends great this way, but definitely wanders on the climbs. I've definitely thought that a 29er front end, at 160 or maybe even 150 would be fun to mess around with. Maybe even with the shorter "Trail" rear end.
