Weight is without pedals with 3oz. sealant in each tire. This is a modern rendition (minus the wireless junk) of what a dream "ATB" would be. All-terrain means go out your front door and pedal. This may not appear to be a "budget" build but it really was. Alot of the parts were used, or bought on sale. The complete carbon wheel build was just under $360 and has been pushed hard so far without issue. Frame is stupid light and was stupid cheap on sale, and the build is light but nothing crazy. Brakes will toss you out the front door, and tires have exceeded my expectations for grip. Many of my rides are wedged in close to home and in a short amount of time on hills instead of big mountains. Most of us don't live within 30 mins of world-class mountain bike trails with 1k+ vert runs at our disposal. Even at my weight, I don't NEED a 36 or shock reservoir to charge Black Diamonds with reckless abandon. DHF EXO trail tire combo would add about 500g to this build but the bike remains way lighter than anything I see offered OEM. Super fun bike that strikes a great balance of capability, efficiency, and playfulness. I am 5'8" 190 pounds and ride fairly aggressively for reference. No flats yet fingers crossed ...

Sweet bike, but having really hard time believing that weight.  I have a S4 same frame.  XO Drivetrain with XX cranks, Zipp Hitop wheels, carbon intergrated bar/stem, and xc esque ground control tires and I'm in the mid 27 lb range.  If I lose the pedals it just barely gets below 27 lbs.  Really struggling to see where the extra 3 lbs is at.

Shock and fork might be a bit lighter as I have Pike 35 and Deluxe, and heavier cassette, but unless those wheels are like 1200g which sounds sketchy as hell for something from aliexpress that would freak me out lol.

Hi there bmied31! You are the first to ever question my bike weights over a decade of me geeking out on builds! Which is honestly surprising, most people probably don't believe it and move on. But I get it, I would doubt it too since every bike out there since covid seems like a porker. The "spirit of enduro" ruined trail bikes if you ask me. I built this as a XC/Trail bike that doesn't pretend to be slaying downhills. I have bigger bikes for that. I have weighed this at the shop and on a luggage scale, both were the same. I just checked your build and I see alot of things adding up the grams, but your I assume the goal for your bike wasn't for lightweight XC weenie stuff. Your Pike is around 1950g where this 34 is 1730g with the axle, starnut, and headset race installed. I could save another half pound if I got the new 34SL. Reverbs are porkers without the batteries but the wireless ones are brutal. The 120mm Oneup V3 (shimmed) on mine is 370g which is 300-400g lighter than AXS Reverbs, that one is a big one. Going up to a 150mm dropper would only cost me about 30g staying with Oneup. Codes are fairly heavy for an XC build and the Magura Trail Sports save around 150-200g especially since I used Ti bolts throughout and I still get to nose wheelie with 4 pistons out front and do big skids with 2 in the back. Next would be the Transmission AXS derailleur that is about 470g...my M9000 rear derailleur is at 221g with the medium cage (cable and housing additional 51g so still 199g lighter) and I get to run a shorter chain (not sure how much lighter) with the 9-45 cassette (319g) and 30t chainring. That derailleur has been going strong for over a decade now. The China wheelset is 655g front and 744g rear and my notes didn't mention if that was with or without valve stems and rim tape. I would assume without. The 29 x 2.6" Barzos are 818g and 808g. The carbon saddle weighs 135g when most saddles are 300g+. I run about 2 ounces of sealant front and 3 ounces rear, not 8 ounces like some of my buddies seem to do... Galfer 180 rotors are 105g each, S3 frame with shock, collar, and axle were 2400g. The Candy pedals are the plastic ones that are far lighter than really any other pedals out there at about 260g. The plastic body is a little easier on the carbon cranks when I stuff them into rocks. China wheelset has been solid and I have done some heavy landings, jagged rock lines, and burped the rear on a berm and they haven't complained yet. I usually destroy one wheel a year on either my trail or enduro bike so I see rims as a wear item. I have one spare rim just in case I munch one. Worst case I destroy the china carbons and re-lace the wheels with Velocity Blunt SS rims and that would only cost about 100g total. 

In summary: For you to see 3 pounds off your bike, I think you would need to toss the wireless for "vintage" Eagle XX1 or XTR shifter/derailleur, get an E13 or Garabuk cassette with less range, definitely ditch any and all Reverbs for a Oneup V3 or similar lightweight dropper, get a SID or 34SL fork, run a carbon saddle that may or may not injure your undercarriage, and swap those Codes for something lighter like Magura Trail SL, Trail Sport, or Formula Cura. Oh yeah, and maybe run less sealant. I don't think I could imagine a more blasphemous shopping list aside from also recommending a Suntour fork!

I should add the 40mm Answer ATAC stem can't be found anymore and they weigh 93g! I bought a ton of them when they were discontinued and popped up on Ebay. Clearly I'm not concerned with running what is "en vogue."

Haha, fair enough, sweet ride! I'd love to ride them back to back and feel the difference.  Regarding Suntour...fantastic stuff once you get above their entry level.  My favorite fork ever was my Auron RSC PC2 I had on my prior bike.  So plush and sensitive and easy to service.

 

Sweet ride.  I did think about ditching my reverb, but if I did I'd end up going with a 210 Oneup and at that point the weight savings is minimal.

Having bounced between bikes for years, I would say the biggest difference that changes the entire demeanor of a bike is the tires. Light, fast-rolling XC tires make a massive difference. If I put the DH casing Assegais front and rear on this thing it would feel like a sloth by comparison but I would send it down some serious trails without worry. The only thing that would hold it back the most is the 120mm dropper. Just the 30mm less than my big bikes makes a difference. A 150mm (for me) is all I need even on my Enduro. At 5'8" with a 31" inseam (longish legs for my height) and my ass finds the rear 27.5" tire before the saddle gets in the way. My legs aren't short so I really don't understand the 200+ dropper for people shorter than 5'10" or so. I tried a 180 and 200 and I never put them down the whole way. I had to do a deep squat just to push it down to the bottom. The 200 made the seat a touch too high as well. 

Preferences aside, it is pretty crazy the amount of weight bloat of some modern parts for trail bikes. My belief is that the brands currently can't afford to develop specific components for analog vs ebikes so they are over-building everything at the high end to be durable enough for the Eeebs at the expense of XC to trail builds. That, and a lengthy convo with a big-brand regional rep who admitted that only the limited-edition and/or fully blinged out bikes have been selling since Covid. Those buyers only want the latest and greatest with no regard to the real performance potential. "as long as it looks expensive on the rack of the Volvo" was one of his statements. So they are chasing what these not-actually-concerned-about-performance buyers spending their money on for survival of their brand. Mid-priced bikes, no matter the genre, have not been moving well since Covid unless they go on blowout sale. That said I also believe there is an element of "service subscription" that brands are looking to cash in on. Since about 2020, there hasn't been a reason to upgrade so brands are looking for other ways to keep cash rolling in. Specialized Levo bikes have certain firmware and services that only authorized dealers can complete which locks the consumer into expensive service at a shop. Once these wireless drivetrains are a few years old, the ball will be in the court of the manufacturer when serious issues arise and they want that control. They hate that I am still running a decade-old derailleur on my Stumpy without issue. They will surely update the batteries and stop producing the "end of life" models to force a new purchase or charge a premium for service and/or parts on legacy models.

The proof to me is that, when specced on a new-bike, the price premium of wireless stuff over a similar bike from 2 years ago with a high-end analogue build is not much at all, but the individual component cost for AXS or Di2 is massive outside of OEM spec. This brand rep noted how cheap SRAM and (now) Shimano are offering the brands wireless derailleur systems on these new bikes, with the expectation that between batteries, rebuild parts, and having to replace entire derailleurs at $450+ that they will be able to survive on a new business model of big margins and more consumables to sell to locked-in consumers. That, and service-intensive parts like the Mavens. All of my buddies with Mavens have had to bleed them multiple times and do frequent "piston massages" to keep them from firming up and/or going to the bar. They have spent more money or time servicing parts that are less than one season old than they ever have. In some respects, like the automotive world, the tech of mtb is going backwards IMO.

These older generation Stumpys are a great example of no reason to upgrade when compared to the newest fad of "lightweight trail bikes" we are seeing touted from every media outlet. I rode a 2001 Santa Cruz Bullit from 2002 to 2012 with barely any upgrades. I only replaced chains, chainrings, brake pads, and tires for the most part. That period also didn't see massive changes until 27.5, boost, tapered headtubes, and 1x started coming around and it was great not having to sweat how many milliseconds new shiny bits would snag off your strava time for that glorious decade. We are there again but with better bikes and the brands hate it.
