Syn.Bike and Linkage Design Help?

Alright... mega super rookie here. As green as it gets and as lost as it gets. I am very determined this winter to design my own frame because I have grown too frustrated as a tall person and certain geo/ balance never just feeling where I want it. I have started with Syn.Bike and it has been a blast starting to learn that software for design! Very challenging for me to be honest as I try to wrap my mind around it. Sometimes it is just chasing my tail in a circle! I am trying to do just a simple Horst (inspiration on kinematics from experience with Frameworks and Raaw bikes). I have all of my geo figured out already and pretty happy with it (maybe minor changes to come but overall good). 

I have a decent base with my linkage right now but I am struggling with little things and getting to the sweet spot. Near where I want with leverage but needing a more linear end. My antisquat is slightly higher than I want. etc. I am near the ballpark of my ideas but needing to fine tune.  I was wondering if anyone on here might have the mental capacity and enjoyment in it and willing to take on giving some guidance? I understand that I am asking a bit and understand that I do still need to keep tinkering and learning myself. That, I promise I am continuing to do! This is a whole new realm for me and no design experience. 

 

Where I will be going with this is a full CNC frame. Why? As someone very green and unknowledgeable on this all, I have to grasp onto the resources that I have. I have slight access to two very intelligent friends that are VERY good with solidworks and design. One engineers eye medical devices for work and builds buggies and crawlers for a hobby. The other used to engineer parts for trophy trucks and now engineers RC crawlers and parts for a big company. Thankfully, both bike as well so have an understanding of where I am trying to go with it. One has access through his connections to a CNC that would be capable of taking on creating a frame. We figured as green as we are, CNC would help with tolerances and take out the headaches of finding the right people for welding, heat treatment, etc and allows us to just work at a one stop shop that there are connections with. There have been some great resources online that we have all been following along to learn more about everything with the design process. Grateful for that! 

Anyways, I am hoping to be solid on the CNC and design part. Have figured out my geo pretty solidly. Now just kind of needing some assistance if anyone is willing to give any for fine tuning my linkage and kinematics. Appreciate any and all the help with anything related to all of this!

When you say you are near where you want with leverage but needing a more linear rear end, what do you mean? Like is the initial or final leverage ratio where you want it but the amount of progression is not?

Approaches from the opposite end of the spectrum... Put targets in, kicks out pivot points.

You need to be a bit more mindful of packaging constraints, so worth putting back into linkage before you move to cad.

 

Thinking about manufacturing, and method, now gives you a great head start... Keep that in mind all the time, picture and pester your mates about design choices and changes. It'll save you a ton of time by not approaching it iteratively

I was happy with my starting leverage but the end had a little bit too much ramp and I wanted a more linear end. I might have figured all my kinematics out! It helped big time to work in a different software and help me see things differently.

I had not until your comment. I am VERY appreciative of you adding that link and recommending it. I tinkered with it for the entire day today was honestly able to pretty much work through everything I wanted to! I got my geo figured out and that software was able to help me draw the kinematics I was after and it computed the layout for me! Freaking awesome! I am extremely stoked to have that all figured out as now I can start moving forward with design. 

 

The manufacturing and method is definitely helping me get going with design! I will definitely keep that in mind what you shared and I appreciate the advice! Really looking forward to keeping this moving and what's to come.

I was happy with my starting leverage but the end had a little bit too much ramp and I wanted a more linear end. I might have figured all my kinematics out! It helped big time to work in a different software and help me see things differently. 

I was wondering if that might be the case. If you assume the general shape of a leverage curve is defined, which is usually accurate if you’re looking at one particular layout, you can define two of the following: travel, initial leverage, and final leverage. In the example where the leverage curve is a line in the form of mx+b with an initial leverage ratio of 3 and final leverage ratio of 2 and a 65 mm stroke shock, travel has already been set at 162.5 by defining those two numbers. This is because the integral of the leverage curve over the bounds of the shock stroke is your travel. If there is a specific amount of travel and ramp that you want, I wouldn’t get too tied up in initial leverage ratio. Shock tuning can get you the feel you want any reasonable initial leverage ratio. What shock tuning can’t correct for is the shape of a leverage curve. If you do some oddly shaped curve to hit specific travel and initial/final leverage numbers, you’re more likely to end up with a less desirable feel.
