More Than Just an Enduro Race Bike - Pivot Firebird Long-Term Review
Snappy, stable, adjustable, and efficient—the Firebird brings a lot to the table.
Rating:
Vital Review

The latest generation of Pivot's Firebird enduro bike is a unique beast with an enticing set of skills. Despite its aggressive intent, it manages to balance big-hit capability with surprising efficiency on climbs. It's also got a lot of pep in its step for a 165mm bike. Marketed as the weapon of choice for Pivot's EDR racers, there is a lot more to unpack about the Firebird than just raw speed that makes it a compelling option for those wanting a long-travel bike.

Highlights

  • 165mm rear wheel travel // 170mm fork
  • 29-inch or mixed wheel options (XS frame MX only)
  • Full carbon frame
  • DW-Link suspension design
  • 63.8 or 64.2-degree head tube angle
  • 'Swinger' chainstay length adjustment
  • Size-specific chainstay lengths
  • 12x157 Superboost rear hub spacing
  • Press fit bottom bracket
  • High and Low pivot flip chip
  • Leverage rate flip chip
  • 'Toolshed' in-frame storage
  • New cable port design
  • Full downtube rubber protector
  • Oversized straight head tube to accommodate reach & angle adjust headsets
  • Sizes: XS-XL
  • 10 build kits
  • Weight (size Large, Pro XO Build): 35.28 lbs (16 kgs)
  • MSRP: $6,499 - $13,699 USD (as tested - $10,349)

Strengths

Weaknesses

  • Maintains balance through repetitive, deep compressions
  • Rides low and planted equating to confidence the harder you ride
  • Geometry puts you in an ideal position to lock into corners
  • Crazy efficient pedaling platform for a 165mm bike
  • Snappy and engaging
  • Plenty of adjustments to match different preferences
  • Stiff frame limits comfort and predictability in loose conditions
  • Super boost spacing adds to stiffness and 'wind up' of the rear end
  • Slack enduro geometry still limits bike's climbing abilities
  • Cheapest build isn't that cheap
  • Frame storage opening is on the narrower side

Vital Rating

  • Climbing: 4.5
  • Descending: 4.5
  • Fun Factor: 4.5
  • Value: 3.5
  • Overall Impression: 4.25
