Hi all,
Anyone got information on the insert length of any ZS cups? Maybe some of you have some lying around to measure up? A few companies list this data, such as Works and 9point8, but it's a struggle to find anything on the more regular brands.
I'm specifically looking for a 10mm insert on a ZS44 cup. I picked up a used bike with some damage to the headtube which I think a deeper cup insert and some loctite 638 will remedy.
Cheers!
The FSA headset catalog will be your best resource here. They have drawings for all their headsets.
Also, if you have enough material, you can shave the head tube down with a facing tool to remove some of the damage.
Thanks!
Unfortunately the FSA catalogue that I've seen appears to list dimensions for everything bar the insertion length. I'll start reaching out to companies and see what I hear back.
The damage appears from 3-4mm from the top, might be possible to reface, I'll take another look and consider that as an option. I'm assuming someone whacked a cup in on an angle and it's introduced play with the standard unit.
Insertion depth is usually a frame specific dimension, but in my experience frame manufacturers follow what the headset drawing requires plus a small buffer, usually a 2-3mm, for ream depth. Head tubes tend to be butted internally so the ID gets slightly bigger after the press fit interface. You should be able to see where the ream ends and measure that with a caliper.
I’ve not worked with ZS in a long time, probably over a decade, but IIRC 8mm is most common, some are 11mm, and there was a burly 14mm model (at one point it was called “The Pig”, but I think they renamed it).
ZS is basically the IS insert in some carbon frame. Those are bonded in with epoxy, which will likely fill a bigger gap than retaining compound.
