this weekend will be interesting as well as confusing when the new protected rider rules have more of an effect. for the men in lenzerheide the top 20 from last year were protected for the semi and the top 10 for the final. Now it's top 10 plus the best rank riders from this season will make the 20 protected riders for the semi. For the final it's top 3 from last year and then the best from this year to make 10 protected riders. So looks like Minaar and Kerr are protected for the semi final as they were Top 10 last year but aren't protected for the final as they are not Top 10 this year. Will need to do well in Qualies, Semis and Finals to build points to get back into the top 10 and be protected.
I don't know, but after having watched this first round, it reminded me of good ol grassroot DH racing.
Amateur DH racing in Socal "back in the day" did a two run format in the Cal State Series (combined times, no less). Team Big Bear had a four-run combined format all in one day too- called Gotta Thunder. I did consistently well all those years and my second runs were always faster than the first (no jitters by then). I definitely got my registration fees' worth with all the racing.
Amended rules regarding the protected riders. Troy and Dak would be protected for the semi-final but maybe only Troy for the final as Dak is sitting 11th overall this year
Accidentally looked at final results rather than overall results. Two of the riders who jumped ahead are hatton and kolb. Kolb with a 2nd in semis and a crash in finals. And hatton with a 8,17,10 to daks 13,19,9
for riders fighting for that last protection spot qualifying is going to be really important.
I don't like the semi-finals. I am all for more racing but it must be meaningful racing. I didn't watch the semi-finals and I can honestly say it didn't make a difference for watching the final. Something like the IXS cup would have worked much better (top 30 qualify for a super final, all others race a b-final): super final pays big in points, while b-final pays some points for like top 5 so that: 1) fast racer can still keep up with the title race even if they miss a super-final once and 2) people not making the super-final can still get UCI points to race next year and 3) they get to show their speed/talent/possible ROI for sponsors etc.... I also don't like the fact that last year results grant anyone protected status (I know it's nothing new). It's fine for the first race, but afterwards it must be current top 20 in standing and that's it IMO. With semi-finals, have the top 20 in points be protected for semis and have like the top 5 being protected for finals also.

Oh so that's how the shit protection system works.
I belive it will be Amaury and 1-9 from Lenzerheide protected then. Believe Troy and dak are now protected so I’m not complaining
