Shaun Palmer's World Champs Run in Cairns 1996, DID NOT WIN because he chose NOT TO WEAR A SKIN SUIT, if he did wear one, he would have won against Nico Vuilloz , who is still the greates world champs racer of all time, but CHANGED THE SPORT FOREVER FROM THERE ON...
As I sat at the party pool with Palm after that race, I said 'if you woulda worn the damn skin suit, you would have won' and he told me he would have been so uncomfortable and looked like a twat, that he probably would have crashed...so 'would have' is not really a thing hahaha.
Hell of a race in Cairns.
Hell of a party sponsored by rockshox in downtown Cairns, was legendary, palmers rental car was this tiny convertible that he and his mechanic Joe Buck drove to the race every day, with bikes sticking out the back seat.
Palm changed the sport, when it comes to gear, when he decided to wear denim at the spain world cup, when he was in contract fight with Fox, he told them to F off and sharpied the jeans.
Also worth mentioning Tracey Hannah in Cairns 2017 Worlds, she crashed and still got 3rd, reminiscing of Hill in VDS...

Was a big "what could have been" since se was racing on home soil and would have been a pretty sweet win, was really gutted for her when she crashed...
Totally, and her head smashed sooo hard, we were shocked and waiting for her to move, standing on the couch

Sam Hill holds the title for best what could have been run. The comments about the third in Champery in the wet are complimentary, but it is not 'what could have been', it was a great run. He didn't crash out, and he got a lot of credit for it. Weather was a factor, but it was still a great run, top to bottom. The best what could have been was Val Di Sole in 2008. That run could have been on par with some of the all time biggest win margins, and was derailed by a big crash, in front of everyone. That's why Val Di Sole is the top.
He did crash during his 3rd place run at Champrey.
Not a crash but could been huge for two careers. 2009 Cambria. I am sure we can find something that happened to Greg that cost him .05 seconds. Greg get another championship, and Steve is left thinking what more can I do.
I'm glad it went the way it did but just imagine had it been the other way around.
Another one could be Sam at VDS in 2013 - less than .5 sec off the fastest first split then he went down - could have been his revenge on that track and a big boost in his confidence after a couple of off years?
