Just throwing this out there - pump track dreams coming together but felt like I took a big step back this weekend with a delivery of clay that turned out to be super hard to work with as it was largely in huge chunks that all the water and tamping in the world could barely break down.
Any tips on working with clay like this? I decided to rough in more of the track with this stuff then I'll get another delivery of screened dirt as my finish? Any other ideas?
Mixing dirt types typically doesn't work very well as they don't always bond together like you'd hope which can lead to the finish surface chunking off. If you do go that route, ensure that your screened dirt finish layer is a solid 6+ inches thick.

It sucks to work with and takes 10x longer than it should, but after a year a recent pumptrack build in New Castle has proven that those chunks eventually do break down and create a solid surface, its not ideal, I'd work with it if it was the only option, but if you can, just get the rough shape worked out then like Turman said, get a 70/30 clay/sand mix as the finish surface. It will be a pleasure to work with and makes life so much easier while doing your monthly maintenance. Need help

Thx!
Guessing I can't get a 70/30 clay sand mix without paying a ton for it. So it'll just be a screened finish dirt of whatever the local stuff is.
Hope mother nature helps with some water over the next few weeks. Probably won't finish this till September with next Spring being the real "done" date when considering all the other landscaping that'll go with it...
Kind of feel like the bros in Step Brothers when they made bunk beds "YOU SHOULD HAVE NEVER LET US DO THIS!"
This thread gave me much inspiration to build mine. Still needs dialing but it keeps getting better and faster.
I need a lot of work still lol but I'll get there. There's no way I could've done this without a machine either. It all had to be touched one way or another with a shovel or tamper, but I can't imagine moving over 60 ton of clay with just a wheelbarrow!! Another trailer load and I hope to put some more lines in and maybe a small jump or two. https://youtu.be/rnywYgMd6Tw
Ok, I think that my backyard needs an upgrade, too! What should I start with, guys? Any ideas and inspiration forums for me? I feel like I will transform the backyard into a mess because there is an open-air terrace where my parents are hanging out often on weekends. They won't get so excited by my idea, but I should definitely give it a try. Maybe, If I promise them that I will clean the grass all the time, we could make a deal. Yes, we have artificial grass here, and it's tough when the mold should be cleaned. But since I have discovered how quickly it could be done, as this guy describes https://trimthatweed.com/how-to-clean-artificial-grass/ I have no problem.
