Hey fellow riders,

I'm doing a footwear design project involving slopestyle/freeride mountain biking and I wanted to know if you guys have sustained any kind of injury to your foot or ankles or have any feedback as to what you look for in a shoe.

Also, What shoe do you ride with and why?

For instance, I've sustained bruised heels, sprained ankles, and many pedals bites when I used to BMX.

Thanks guys! Appreciate your feedback.

Padding for the inside of the ankle is key for catching tail whips and imperfect foot placement in DH.

This. I have extra-bony ankles and I often get a bloody spot on my right-side one. A padded sock might be cool.

After goofing up my ankle several years ago, I typically look for something with good ankle support. The high top Five Ten Impacts were a favorite for a while, for example. I also like a hard toe as smashing them into rocks can really hurt, but have yet to find many pairs that are up to the task in this area.

Good point on the toe protection. It occurred to me as I was reading that ,that instead of a big, covers the whole front of the foot and doesn't flex much type support, it could connect to the sole of the shoe and wrap around just the front and sides of the toes on the outside, allowing for more flex in the shoe. Does that make sense?

Same here as many folks... shin bites, heel injuries from posting my foot into the ground...
.
Riding clipped, the shoes are stiff enough to offer protection from the heel injuries... at least for me.
Riding flats... I really like my Teva Links (on my second pair), the low ones. I swap them out for my 5.10 hightop Impacts depending on where I'm riding.
.
Padded tongues are okay... but not pillows!... my Emerica skate shoes have too much of a pillow tongue, and I was a bit concerned when I first got my Impacts... but they turned out to be fine.
.
The Impacts are fine for big rocky trails, but for lighter places I prefer the Links... a bit more flex, not as heavy, but still offer me protection.
