Mr Blackmores Corner - Blog about bikes (technical view)

Hi! I want to present you my blog. I try to continue the idea of Linkage Design blog and the ideas that come to my mind. I hope you like it and comments are welcome.

Cheers!

Haha for sure #26aintdead, but any brand launches a new fs 26 bike. I analyse the latest bikes so for this reason I don't include it in the poll.

The Commencal HPP system is to me the most dialed suspension system currently available what are your thoughts, & yes I will check out blog later today

Thanks! Well, it has highs and lows. Overall I think is a great machine for bikeparks, freeride or this kind of trails and riding style. About kinematics is remarkably the low PK values with small rear cogs, the flat and high AS curve which ensures great stability and composure under hard pedalling, and the rearward axle path for better absorption. All of this are important things to consider if we focus in downhill capabilities. Maybe a bit more progressive LR curve would be great, but this is not a really important thing. Comparing with other systems, I think is different and the most interesting is that it has their own personality.

Cheers

So if I’m getting what your saying correctly, in it’s current configurations it may not be the best as say a Enduro bike suspension where your covering s full range of gearing & a lot of pedaling, yes?

I’ve been involved in the power sports industry for many years & the pedaling side of suspension is still something I’m getting my head around.

Thanks for your time invested here this is some good stuff.

Antonio, your site is so sick.

I'm using it currently to compare leverage ratios of a couple bikes, as I'm trying to figure out shock tunes and whether or not a coil shock will work on my new trail bike. It's interesting to see the how some of the ratios are super wild, just as some are super linear.

Really nerding out, and it's great!

Would you consider this bike better than the Polygon Square One?

Great articles, btw. Smile

I think the Commençal pedals quite good but considering whole bike and not only kinematics, weight and geometry reduce their climbing abilities. For this reason the approach of the bike is more focused in gravity than "all mountain".

Maybe this article can help you with anti-squat: https://mrblackmorescorner.blogspot.com.es/2017/09/conceptos-basicos-pa…

Thank you, but I´m not Antonio haha I only try to continue his work with a different style Wink

Thanks! Comparing bikes overall is very difficult without real testing, so I only can answer about kinematics. In my opinion, there are three major differences between them: Anti-rise (or brake squat), Pedal Kickback, and Leverage Rate.

AR on the Supreme is a bit excessive due to the high main pivot, causing probably losses of traction and a higher compression than normal on the shock when braking. So 1 point for the Polygon, which has a good compromise between traction and geometry composure.

Using an additional pulley, the Commençal can maintain a low PK (specially low in smaller rear cogs) and high pedalling efficiency (on pair with Polygon), so 1 point for Supreme.

LR is not so different but there are two details in the shape of the curve. In the first half of the travel the Commençal has a bit more support due to a lower LR, and at the end, the Polygon is a bit more progressive (additional 150 N of force are required to get full travel with the same coil spring of 400 lbs). In this case there isn't a winner because it depends more on the preferences of each rider.

I was forgotten the rear axle path. The Supreme has a rearward path (about 4 cm max.), which can help with the absorption of obstacles but I don´t know how much is noticeable in real riding. Polygon has a standard path, practically vertical.

I don't know if I clarify you something haha

Very helpful feedback! Definitely a lot more to consider (price, sizing, availability, parts, etc.) but your comments on kinematics certainly gives people a lot to think about.

Cheers!
