When it comes to components, some are relatively cheap while some are hyper expensive. Sometimes cheap components can lead to hyper expensive service bills down the road. Chains are one of those cheap components that, if left unchecked can cause a $400+ cassette to become worn out and useless. That is why I picked up the Park Tool CC-3.2 Chain Wear Indicator. It’s not just a tool a mechanic should have, it’s a tool that anyone who rides a bike should have. After using it for over a year now, here are my two cents on it:
Performance
It may not be the most attractive or fancy chain checking tool out there, but in my opinion it offers the best and most accurate measurements on chain wear. I also have the Park Tool CC-2 chain checker but have stopped using it due to reliability issues I have become aware of. If the pins of the CC-2 get accidentally bent, the tool will give false readings which can become quite pricey.
The reason why I like the CC-3.2 tool is because it doesn’t rely on somewhat fragile pins to work. It’s a chunk of metal plating that works every time, even if it gets slightly bent.
Important Info to Keep in Mind
There is a common idea that all chains should be replaced at 0.75%. This is not the case, however. For 9- and 10-speed chains, yes .75% is where Park Tool recommends replacing a chain. BUT if you are running an 11- or 12-speed drivetrain, you need to be checked on 0.5% side. Failure to realize this could result in premature wear on one of those $400+ cassettes I mentioned earlier.
Bottom Line
The Park Tool CC-3.2 is not only easy and simple to use, it is the most accurate and reliable chain checker in my opinion. Less moving parts = less room for error. It’s a tool that not only mechanics should own but everyone who owns a bike. They aren’t crazy expensive so if you don’t currently have one, make sure it’s on your to-do list.
Specifications
