I am going to be building up a new Spartan carbon frame and have been trying to figure out what cranks to run.

I've been looking at the RF turbine, new shimano XT (m8000), Sram X1, or used XTR (previous gen M980). All of these cranks run about the same price so I was curious what people thought would be the best bang for the buck.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I'm doing exactly the same at the moment. Have you thought about crank length too? Apparently with the low BB on the Spartan some people have had issues with striking the ground. I'm liking the look of the Turbine at the moment.

Which shimano would you choose, used XTR or new XT?

I dig that the XTR cranks have a polished finish, so even after a few years of use they'll still look good. Lower weight is a nice perk, too.

Are you planning on running a single ring or double? If single, XT may more sense due to the chainline.

Definitely single ring up front, how much does the chainline effect shifting, and chain retention?

It all depends on what gears you most commonly use. If you're a spinner with long climbs, it may make sense to go for a crank that places the ring closer to the bb. You'll put less of an angle on the chain and parts will wear better.

If in doubt, email Devinci and ask what they'd recommend, or check out the cranks that come stock on the Spartan. Every bike was designed with a specific chainline or goal in mind.
