“If you're addicted to pleasure, you're going to be hurt by pain.
Suffering is the inability to see both sides.
Both are vital—light and dark.
Every moment is an event.
Don't be trapped as a victim of history—master your destiny.”
This quote stuck with me from the start. It inspired BE FREE, a project born from pure passion, with no sponsors—just vision, creativity, and a love for doing things that seem impossible.
From a Dinner Chat to a 36-Hour Mission
One evening over dinner with my good friend Roberto Ferrarin—an absolute wizard with drones—we started talking about ideas. Crazy ones, as always. Roberto is that kind of person: full of energy and always excited to push boundaries. That night, we came up with something wild.
“What if we mounted a massive light onto a drone?”
That way, we could shoot not only long-exposure photos but also ride and film during the night. A big challenge, sure—lifting and maneuvering heavy lights with a drone isn’t easy—but Roberto was all in. And not long after, he built a rig that could handle it.
The Black Hills: A Mystical Playground
We chose the Black Hills, a mystical landscape I’ve visited many times before. Under daylight, the black dirt formations already look unreal—but at night, lit by a flying spotlight, we knew it could turn into something surreal. We called our best friends from the commercial world, (Fabrizio Accettulli, Simone Rudas, Pid, Alessandro Mollo and an extra help from Filippo Arcuri) packed the vans, and left for what became a 36-hour creative mission.
Nightfall: Testing Limits
We arrived late afternoon. I walked the crew through the line, spotted some angles, then we grabbed a quick dinner. As darkness fell, we set up at the bottom of the trail and started experimenting. We had no idea if this would work. Filming MTB in pitch-black night using only a drone-mounted light? Totally uncharted territory. The temperature dropped to -4°C, which was fine for me as I was riding up and down to stay warm, but brutal for the crew who had to stand still for hours. But slowly, piece by piece, it started to click. We filmed until 4AM, capturing something truly different.
Sunrise and Wrap-Up
After just a few hours of sleep and a quick breakfast, we went back to the site to grab a few final shots in the morning light. And just like that—we wrapped. No big production. No brands. No safety nets. Just us, our gear, our creativity, and a shared belief that it could be done.
