i think you just answered your own question. 1 in 3 American's have unpaid debt that has been reported to collections for non-payment. I think you are wise to buy within your means. There are plenty of awesome, affordable aluminum bikes that will give you a killer trail experience.

The majority of the bikes I'm seeing on the trails in the SF Bay Area are 5k at a minimum. Many are closer to 8-10k builds on carbon frames. Ibis Mojo, Ripleys, Santa Cruz, and Specialized seem to rule the trails in the area. Wide variety of owners. Everyone from military (me), construction workers, to tech industry types enjoying their shred machines. Granted my bike is considered middle end at 4k with an aluminum frame.
