This is an air spring running parallel to the coil spring, with the top out associated with a positive-only air spring being handled by a negative coil spring inside the damper. Shocks that had an air valve in the reservoir which you could "tune" didn't do much as the pressure was being applied only to the cross section area of the shaft. The Boost Valve variants from Fox had a pressure sensitive valve which increased or decreased the compression damping depending on the pressure inside the shock, originally thought to provide more compression damping deeper into the stroke (position sensitive)...

Fig.7 diagram looks weird, this is my interpretation Interesting idea to have a dual u-cup dust trap but the friction may be a bit high with so many seals.

Weird your CS didn't come with a travel o-ring, all the DBairs (CS or not) I've sold and have in stock have one.

It looks like the Kashima Fox 40 equipped bike had the front wheel glued to the ground more than any other fork (the Boxxer was very close to the KF40)... may be speed, setup or rider input but I found it very interesting.
