i rode flats for about 10 years exclusively before getting a road bike and starting to ride clipped in. on the road, the benefits are huge. i finally made the plunge to clips on the MTB trying to keep up with all my faster friends who ride clips, the trails are mostly fast and rocky and can be very technical...
definitely clean, and definitely the ideal from a design perspective. Pinion knows where to head with it, the trick is how do you get something like that to go mainstream? I mean, we can't even get a "standardized" BB or head set anymore...a gear box more or less needs to be integral to the frame otherwise its going to add...
on a fundamental level, what exactly is wrong with chains and derailleurs? efficiency is key on anything powered by humans (cause even the strongest ones are pretty weak compared to the duty cycle of a electric motor or combustion engine), and i just don't see gearboxes reaching the same level of efficiency as a conventional chain/derailleur setup. replacing the chain...

guerilladownhilla Added a reply to Boxxer WC 05 upgrade

you can put the guts from a newer boxxer in there, including the air spring. i've never tried the air spring, and some people i trust think there might be problems getting it to seal as the coil spring you currently have makes tiny marks on the sealing surface inside the stanchion. avalanche downhill racing makes a cartridge damper kit...
