REAR review: In the dry they are very fast & grippy, and one of the few tires I've tried that is very fast, but still does not give up on steep & techy climbs. Breaking is good as well. I use them on my single speed (standard 60tpi 630g) & AM bike (special 33 tpi 775g) Does great on both valley hardpack trails and high elevation soft & loose trails - a rarity. Outstanding rear tire! I would first go with the smaller chain ring. Cheaper and easier to replace and it will still make a big difference in pedaling.

I HATE BIKE THIEVES. This year in Whistler my friend an I had five bikes stolen from the basement of our condo during Crankworx. According to the Whistler RCMP there were about 90 bikes reported stolen in Whistler During Crankworx. The police thought that many of the thefts were related and actually were able to bust a house in Vancouver...

Anyone Else notice that in all of the close up shots of the drivetrain its on the opposite side of the bike? Must just be a mirror effect but it definitely made me look twice.

You might want to check out the Azonic Outlaw Wheelset. They are pretty cheap compared to a lot of other wheels yet are still strong and they come in a variety of colors. I have used them on my Dirt Jump bike for a year now with no problems.
I have always used a 1X9 set-up on my trail bike and I love it. I use a 34t chainring that seems to work the best for me but if you say there are only hills not mountains where you live and you have powerful legs, you could get away with up to a 36t. I wouldn't go any bigger...
