Maybe someone forgot to properly reassemble the fork after a service. I'm pretty sure lowers don't just fall out.

Well… previous, non-trail Elixir 7 was in stock on Specialized Demo 8, isn't it a sign of that it was quite enough? I'm not against new ones, but servicing 4 pistons would be more tricky (read $$) than simple 2 piston device; just my opinion.
