Is it worth buy new one or upgrade more than 10y old bike?

Hey guys,

im coming for an advice. I got this bike over 10years maybe and i want to start riding again after a long time. I dont know if i should go to buy a new bike for that or try to upgrade this old one. Its 27,5".

What you think?
Thank you.

Yeah I’d get a new bike.  Or a new to you used bike.  Look for disc brakes, boost axles (current standard that’s not going anywhere), and preferably a decent midrange fork.  I wouldn’t care much about wheel size vs condition of the used bike/ value of a new bike.

What's your budget and how extreme do you want to get out there? That's a perfect bike for some riders and a terrible bike for others.

For $500-700 I would definitely be looking at used bikes. I don't think a new $500-700 mountain bike is going to be a significant improvement, it will still be a hardtail with cross country geometry and an underwhelming fork. The only potential improvement will be disc brakes, and entry level discs can often be extremely underwhelming. The used market should have some older bikes that aren't "cool" or the hot new thing anymore that still ride great.

This is a complex question.

A mountain bikes first purpose is to get you excited about riding so that you ride more. Are you going to stay excited about a $700 used bike for very long? probably not, but if you absolutely hate riding this bike than by all means do it. But understand you'll probably want to start saving for your next bike immediately.

The sweet spot in this market seems to be between $2500 and $5000 before tax. This will get you into a bike that won't get in your way any time soon... so long as you pick the right bike for your terrain and riding style.

What I would do is get  780mm wide bars, grips of your choice, a 50mm stem, some new pedals, and a tune up. Ditch the bar ends and the top tube bag. Ride this until you have $5k in the bank and remember whatever you learn on this bike will make you than much better when you get to your dream machine.

Everything that you bought for this bike could be used on your new ride, but you might want to convert this into a utility bike once you have your new ride.

Good luck on your adventure!

The used market is pretty flooded right now as is the clearance new bike market. Might be able to sweet talk yourself into a decent bike from someone who has something sitting around especially if you stretch your budget by a couple hundred.
