distance and height will depend on what you are looking to accomplish, bigger jumps give you more time
Also check out the step up trick jumps in the movies, the one in Aptos is built into a hill and has a super sandy landing. A lot of trick jumps I have gotten to ride tend to have flatter landings so you dont run the risk of looping out
This step up has a super tall and long lip and is about a 4 foot step up. You have to rebuild the landing every time but its worth it. IMO it is better than a foam pit, it allows you to ride away from the trick yet the landing is comparable to crashing into foam. This is built against the hillside with plywood and 2x4s under it for support.

This is step up lip was made in my backyard first and then carried into its location. We dug out an area for the lip to go and then dug a fat landing into the hillside. Wood is the way to go with a step up like this because it will not get beat up from the rain or from people carving of it trying to do spins and shit.
