The First Red Bull Rampage - 2001 3

It's amazing how far mountain biking has come. The fear and emotion from the first rampage in 2001 was something to experience. The sentiment seemed to be "this is going to kill people or make mountain biking great," as riders tackled the Virgin, UT cliffs for the first time in competition.

I was actually there for the first day of practice shooting video and was so nervous and sketched-out for the riders that I went home. I'm glad the riders had faith and that Todd Barber and Red Bull had the vision to experiment. Mountain biking was never the same after this. -gordo

hehehe love it. the 2nd Rampage DVD was the first MTB film I purchased and it came with an extra feature showing their coverage of the first year. Its crazy how much people have and continue to progress from one year to the next. A line like Canadian Bacon, goes from only a couple riders attempting it, to a large number of riders nailing it the next time around. Also Bourdo going massive on the flake drop... ah what a shot.

Ah those were the days. When riders actually wore body armor. We've already seen some pretty bad injuries lately. Binggeli was pretty fortunate to still be riding after breaking his femur. TV has desensitized us to the risks these guys are taking.
