Canyon Debuts Five-Star Rated Deflectr MTB Helmet

It's lacking one vowel but other than that, it's fully loaded.

Today Canyon debuts their first mountain bike helmet, the Deflectr. Aimed at trail riders of all stripes, the Deflectr is a half-shell helmet that raises the bar on comfort, ventilation, and, most importantly, protection. While no helmet on earth can be said to prevent all injuries or entirely eliminate your risk of experiencing a concussion, the Deflectr rolls out today with Virginia Tech’s highest, 5-star safety rating and currently occupies the expert helmet tester’s #1 slot in the safety rankings. A new, patented technology called RLS plays a significant role in that result.

RLS Raises the Bar

RLS stands for Release Layer System. Helmets with RLS feature dual shells, separated by a release layer membrane. The membrane consists of a layer of polycarbonate bearings. Those bearings allow the second shell to detach when impact energy exceeds a set limit. On impact, those bearings detach from the membrane at the impact site and the rolling action allows easier movement between the shells, decreasing the amount of rotation transferred to a rider’s head during an accident and, thereby, reducing the risk of concussion.

Independently tested and verified by Virginia Tech Institute, RLS technology delivers a true benefit to riders. - Canyon product manager, Tom Smith

Comfort and Fit

The Deflectr is also exceptionally comfortable and well ventilated. Extra-large vents on the top of the helmet enhance evaporative cooling on the long, slow climbs while meticulously-shaped intake and exhaust vents maximize air flow at higher speeds.

When it comes to helmets, fit is everything. The Deflectr’s adjustment dials allow for precise adjustments to its retention system on the fly and its HighBar chin strap ensures that the Deflectr is always optimally positioned, fore and aft. The Deflectr sports the latest “1.5” version of HighBar, which features a ventilated chin strap, improved compatibility with sunglasses, and a lighter-action dial, for even easier adjustments.

Additional Features

No detail went unnoticed on this helmet. The Deflectr’s three-position visor pairs well with sunglasses, allowing you to securely store your shades (when not in use) at the front of the helmet, always within easy reach. The Deflectr is also compatible with Canyon's magnetically-attached rear light system, improving your visibility to and from the trailhead. Attaching a light to the helmet directly avoids the issues of seatpost lights being covered by the tail of a jacket, or not being compatible with dropper posts.
