Hello all! New to vital mtb! I'm coming from motocross and wanted to get into downhill riding. I live in socal so there's plenty of mountains/spots/events to ride. I was looking into getting a hard tail first as a practice bike and plan on getting a dedicated downhill bike when things get serious.

I am currently looking at the Specialized hard rock sport (disc/26) and Specialized P.street 1 (disc/26).
The hard rock sport looks like an overall great bike but idk how it'll do downhill or on jumps.
The P.street 1 looks solid for jumping but idk how it is on trails or up hills with the gearing. (Street tires would be changed).

Does anyone have personal experience on either bike or suggestions on different brands for around $600-$800?
I know price point is key when buying a mtb bike and for my price range, it looks like the 2 specialized bikes comes equipped with some good hardware too. I have two LBS that sell giant, specialized, cannondale, felt, Scott, GT, etc. so my choices aren't limited. Both shops are nice too so I don't want to buy a bike based on the shop, I want the best bike I can get. I plan on doing mostly trail riding, downhill, super d, and leisure rides around town. Like I said I raced motocross so I know bike mechanics and how to ride (my profile pic is of me on my friends downhill bike) so I need a bike that can bomb down hills and take the abuse but also go on a nice 5-10 mile ride around town. Sorry about the ramble, I wanted to be as specific as possible.

Downhill on a hardtail isn't much fun, nor is climbing on a bike intended for dirt jumping. If I were you, I'd save up a few more dollars and purchase an "aggressive trail bike" - something designed to do it all.

The Vitus Escarpe is a great budget bike with good components for the money and really good geometry:

Another good budget option is the upcoming Airborne Enduro bike:

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction sir! The vitus escarpe looks sleek but that price range is what I was expecting to spend on my downhill bike (specialized status 1, status 2, or equivalent bike around $3000). Right now I was looking for a bike to really learn/play on and ride around town to keep my legs/heart/lungs strong. Which will eventually be my back up bike once I get my downhill bike. I don't really want to go past $1200 cause that will defeat the purpose, might as well get my sweet downhiller haha. I don't mind it being a hard tail, cause it's a good training tool.

Agreed with bturnman. Get yourself a nice all mountain bike to start with. You will get the most out of a mountain by enabling you to climb and descend. You won't have any fun riding downhill on a hardtail, you will be riding your brakes all the way down!

If you do decide to get a full DH bike, look at the Norco Aurum. Starting at around $3,000 USD, you get a lot of bang for your buck. If you can stretch your budget a bit, the Aurum 6.2 has specs equivalent to bikes that are priced for 2 grand more. Plus they ride great!
