I'm 5'9" and wondering if a small Demo 8 will fit me better than a medium. The medium seems long compared to other medium DH bikes.
I currently have a medium w/50mm long stem and I'm thinking about getting a Straitline Ultra 28mm stem to shorten up the cockpit. It will be approximately the same change as going from a medium to a small, but not giving up any actual length on the top tube.
Thoughts/Advice?

I'd say give the shorter stem a try. It's a lot cheaper and less hassle than getting a new frame. At 5'9" you're not short and I can't see a small frame fitting you.

What year is it? All I know is that I am 5'11 and I ride a large and I would never go back to a medium again, so a medium is prolly your best bet. I don't even think troy brosnan rides a small anymore.....

I have a 2011. I'll definitely try the shorter stem before anything else. Most small frames don't fit me, but I've sat on a few mediums that seem shorter than mine (Canfield Jedi, Pivot Phoenix, Giant Glory). I didn't measure them, just going by feel.

I remember when the new demo's first came out they said that x-small was Troy's bike, small was Sam's bike and medium was Brendog's bike, but I think Sam has meddled with bigger bikes since then

I swapped my 50mm stem for the straitline 28mm. After one day at a bike park, I'd say that was what I needed.
