Hey I want to get into mountain biking sometime soon but im confused on style, bikes, and quality.

I ride bmx and recently went on a ride with my friends mountain bike.
I immediately loved the way cruising through the woods and trails
super fast riding down the hills jumping creeks and getting dirty.

I want to get a bike but I dont understand the actual bikes
and quality. What bike would be good for beginner riding
like that?

Also, is it possible to change it to one gear to keep it
cleaner and easier. Im used to bmx conversions
so it would be the same if I made it 25/9 or something.

Im just so confused haha.

Hey Adam,

First figure out what kind of riding you want to do the most of. That will help determine what kind of mountain bike you'll want. Do you want to ride rough downhill stuff, trails, dirt jumps, skateparks, or street?

In terms of single speed gearing, because of the larger wheel diameter, the gear ratio changes. With 20" wheels you use roughly a 2.8/1 ratio like your 25/9. With 26" wheels, a good place to start is around 2/1, like a 24/12. Twelve teeth is the smallest most mountain hubs go. But a few manufacturers are starting to go smaller.
