It was with great sadness today that I read of the passing of Simon Sharp. One of the original founders of Hope, he was incredibly talented on a Mountain bike and also a Trials Motorbike.
Part of the sad news story that I read on Trials central, Article here: http://www.trialscentral.com/news-archive/uk-trials-news/18344-sad-loss…
stated this:
"In his riding career he suffered several concussions, with the most serious resulting in brain bleed and it is believed that this may have led to CTE, a degenerative brain disease that arises from concussions and is associated with impaired judgment and depression and may have contributed to his death."
CTE is something that's been in the news lately with the passing of Dave Mirra, and over the years countless NFL players have either taken their own lives or been involved in murder cases that can be attributed to CTE.
American Football has been around a lot longer than Mountain biking and BMX and the affects of this awful condition are alarmingly clear. What worries me is that our sport is reaching the age where people will begin to suffer from CTE, combined with the brutal nature of some of the crashes Pro riders have, will there be a devastating impact similar to that which has been seen in mainly the NFL so far?
I'm by no means an expert on this subject but I feel strongly that it must be addressed somehow. My question is what can we do? It's sad that people fill their lives with the sport they love only to have that same sport change them psychologically.
I apologise for any misinformation in this post, please correct me if I'm wrong anywhere and feel free to add any opinions or news on this matter.
Thank you
